Big Day Ahead For Magic Man Moreira

Champion Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira has rides in eight of the nine races at Flemington on Saturday including all four Group One races.

The meetings reflects Moreira’s popularity with local stables with the Hong Kong-based star riding for top trainers Chris Waller, Darren Weir, Ciaron Maher and Bjorn Baker.

He also has rides for New Zealand trainers Lance Noble and the Trent Busuttin/Natalie Young partnership.

Moreira is yet to win a race in Victoria. He has had only four unplaced rides on Melbourne tracks but his list of rides on Saturday give him a super opportunity to add to his growing success in Australia.

Moreira has ridden nine winners in Australia (eight in NSW and one in Perth), principally in feature races.

He landed his first Australian Group One race when he won the Epsom Handicap at Randwick on October 4 aboard He’s Your Man for Chris Waller and will be aiming for a G1 double on that horse in Saturday’s LKS Mackinnon Stakes.

Waller also has booked Moreira to ride Brazen Beau in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and Velrosso in the G3 Yellowglen Stakes. Moreira teamed with Brazen Beau at Randwick on October 4 when the colt won the G2 Roman Consul Stakes.

Moreira’s other Group One rides on Saturday are impressive Kiwi three-year-old Atmosphere in the Victoria Derby for Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young and the Kiwi mare Viadana for Lance Noble in the Myer Classic.

Moreira’s chances of riding in his first Melbourne Cup next Tuesday depend on the performance of the Darren Weir-trained Signoff in the G3 Lexus Stakes.

Signoff is 37th on the Melbourne Cup order of entry and needs to win the Lexus to gain a start on Tuesday. If he does Moreira will retain the ride.

Moreira is bursting to ride in his first Melbourne Cup.

“It will be a dream of a lifetime to just be in the race. I've read so much about the Melbourne Cup over the years and it's one race I want to win,” Moreira said this week.

Moreira will face a hectic schedule as he must return to Hong Kong to ride at Sha Tin on Sunday before flying back to Melbourne for the Cup meeting.

Moreira’s other rides on Saturday are the promising Azkadellia for Ciaron Maher in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes and Candelara for Bjorn Baker in the G2 Wakeful Stakes.
