Nigel Blackiston has been a familiar face around Flemington for a long time and Suavito has finally provided him with his first Melbourne Cup carnival win.

After 15 years, trainer Nigel Blackiston has finally secured his first Flemington spring carnival victory.

Moody mare Suavito broke through for Blackiston's maiden carnival win when she snatched victory on the line.

Ridden by Damien Oliver, Suavito ($7) scored by a short half-head from Girl In Flight ($11) with Amanpour ($9.50) a short neck away third.

"This time of year is our grand final. To get a result for great people is fantastic," Blackiston said.

Blackiston has been a familiar figure at Flemington, firstly as a foreman for legendary trainer Bart Cummings, before branching out on his own.

Blackiston said he was worried when the track was upgraded after the running of the sixth race but described Suavito as tough as old boots.

"She was up in weights today and I was a little concerned with the track, but the way she finished it off, she really attacks the line," Blackiston said.

Oliver was surprised to learn it was Blackiston's first success during Cup week.

"I remember Nigel working for Bart when I was an apprentice here at Flemington so it's great for me to get his first winner at Flemington during Cup week," Oliver said.

He said not everything went to plan.

"We had to do a bit of ducking and weaving in the straight and I didn't think we'd have time to pick them up, but she was very brave when I asked her," he said.
