Palentino has graduated from a country maiden win to a Listed race win during Melbourne Cup week.

The two country stables of Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir have complemented each other with the win of Palentino at Flemington.

Having just his third race start, Palentino graduated from a Stawell maiden success to victory in a Listed race on Saturday.

Weir said he could step up in grade again next week in the Sandown Guineas.

Ridden by Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne, Palentino ($7.50) scored by 1-1/4 lengths from Demonstrate ($5.50) with Ngarimu ($4.20 fav) a length away third.

Weir explained Palentino was an uptight colt and the trainer travelled him between the two stables to help settle him down.

He said the Warrnambool beach and the sand dunes had worked their magic.

"After he won at Stawell I thought he needed to go down to Warrnambool to try and calm him down a bit," Weir said.

Weir trained Palentino's dam Palatine Hill to win four races and at the suggestion of her owner, he went to the Tasmanian sale to buy her son.

Palentino will head back to Jarrod McLean at Weir's Warrnambool base to freshen up before next week's Sandown Guineas.

"We'll see how he does during the week," Weir said.

"Jarrod will keep on eye on him and if he has a good week he can run, but he doesn't need to run as he's already done a good job."

Payne, who has been on cloud nine since her Cup success, thought Palentino had done enough following his Stawell win and needing a break.

"Darren sent him to the beach and I didn't know what to expect today," Payne said.

"He's progressed with each trial and run and is shaping as a horse in the making."

The colt brought up a winning double at Flemington for Weir with Dandino winning the Queen's Cup.
