Hugh Bowman Suspended For 20 Meetings

Hugh Bowman has been suspended for 20 meetings, ruling him out of the Cox Plate, Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup meetings, after being charged with improper riding at Caulfield on Saturday.

Luke Nolen was also suspended for 10 meetings on a careless riding charge and Zac Purton fined $3000 for whip rule breaches acfter his winning ride in the Caulfeld Cup on Japanese stayer Admire Rakti.

Bowman pleaded not guilty after stewards alleged he placed other riders in danger while riding Light Up Manhattan in the $750,000 Caulfield Classic.

The stewards alleged there was a "level of intent" in his actions which they claimed placed fellow jockeys Glen Boss and Ben Melham in danger.

Bowman said he had never been charged with improper riding during his career and plans to lodge an appeal against the suspension which begins immediately and expires on November 6.

Stewards found Bowman put Glen Boss on Magicool under unnecessary pressure, forcing him to the rail at the 1400m which in turn caused interference to Ben Melham on Home Run Hero.

He is the second jockey to be found guilty of improper riding in Melbourne this season after Chad Schofield was suspended for a month at Mornington last month

Nolen will miss the Cox Plate meeting at Moonee Valley next Saturday after pleading guilty to careless riding in the Caulfield Cup on Brambles.

Nolan was suspended for 10 meetings and returns to riding on October 29.

Purton was fined $3000 after stewards found he used the whip 13 times before the 100m, eight more strikes than allowed in Australia.

He was fined $1500 for that breach and another $1500 for using the whip in consecutive strides.
