Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan has returned to New Zealand after recovering from the colic attack that derailed his Melbourne Cup bid.

The star stayer arrived back in New Zealand this week after completing his recuperation at the Werribee Veterinary Clinic.

Mongolian Khan will spend two weeks in the spelling paddock before being assessed to help decide whether the horse will be given an autumn campaign or be afforded a longer break.

A dual derby winner as a three-year-old, Mongolian Khan was high in Melbourne Cup betting following his Caulfield Cup victory.

The stallion was struck by a serious colic attack just days before the race.
