Terrubi Doubtful For Cups

David Payne has confirmed to Stewards his doubt regarding French import Terrubi taking his place in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

The David Payne stable has contacted Racing Victoria Stewards to suggest their newly acquired French import Terrubi is doubtful for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Payne was in the UK the past week to monitor the Dalakhani stallion after he failed to beat a runner home in the Grosser Preis Von Baden (2413m) on September 7.

Terrubi had pulled up sore across the back post race and not long after was being quarantined in England prior to his Australian voyage.

The Rosehill-based trainer voiced his concerns regarding the French stayer to the media on Wednesday morning.

“Whatever he is going to put on [condition] in quarantine he is going to take off coming over,” Payne told Sky Sports Radio.

“I think it has been a bit of a rush job myself, they should have left him there but we’ll see what happens.

“Otherwise we will keep him for the autumn, there are lovely races here in Sydney.”

Acquired by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, Terrubi was allocated 56kg for the Melbourne Cup when Racing Victoria released weights on Tuesday.

While yet to be completely ruled out, it would be a loss to the carnival if Terrubi was unable compete through the spring having recorded a career best win in the Prix Maurice De Nieuil in July.

Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock’s Cup’s charge at this stage will be spearheaded by the Marco Botti-trained Dandino.
