Sidestep, a son of Exceed And Excel standing at Telemon Thoroughbreds after serving his first two seasons at Darley, sired Godolphin's first 2YO winner of the season when Kiamichi won on debut over 1200m at Rosehill.

Kiamichi (Sidestep x Ouachita, by Canny Lad) is out of the unraced Ouachita, a relation to three stakes winners including G1 winner and sire Denman (Lonhro).

She is the fifth winner from Ouachita, a sister to Preserve and Rio Osa and half-sister to Denman.

At Newcastle Northern Meteor’s son Deep Field got his first winner when the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Cosmic Force won his 2YO maiden.

Cosmic Force (Deep Field x Little Zeta by Commands) was a $180,000 yearling purchase from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by China Horse Club.

He was bred by Bob and Sue Hannon at Ascot Park out of the mare Little Zeta, making him a half-brother to Group 3 winner Onemorezeta.

In Adelaide the Fastnet Rock filly Pelican, a $450,000 Karaka yearling purchase by Mark Pilkington Management/Lindsay Park Racing, became the second 2YO winner of the season for his sire.

The Coolmore-owned Pelican is out of the seven-time G1 winning mare Seachange (Cape Cross) to join recent Randwick winner Anaheed as Fastnet Rock’s successful juveniles this season.

Pelican is a half-sister to the G3 placed Divan and Melbourne winner Our Sea Goddess.

Other 2YO winners on Saturday included Champagne Jet (Jet Spur) at the Sunshine Coast and first starter Mishani Desire (Real Saga) at the Gold Coast.

Hard Spun gelding Gatting took the honours at big odds in the G2 Lee-Steere Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, ending the unbeaten run of local mare Enticing Star.

Gatting (Hard Spun x Stubborn by Lonhro), trained by Darren Mcauliffe, landed his second victory at G2 level, coming home three quarters of a length in front of Achernar Star (Gingerbread), with Great Shot (Magnus) with Enticing Star out of the money.

Gatting is one of 65 stakes winner by Hard Spun, a son of Danzig who stands at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky.

Gatting’s stablemate The Velvet King (Universal Ruler x Doubleblack Velvet by Show A Heart) continued his upward curve when a decisive winner of the Listed Fairetha Stakes at Ascot to complete a big day for trainer Darren Mcauliffe.

The Velvet King, the fifth stakes winner by WA-based stallion Universal Ruler (Scenic), has recorded three wins from four starts.

Boomer Bloodstock’s Inglis Classic purchase Prize Catch scored his first stakes victory with a comfortable win in the Listed Ascot Gold Cup.

A $42,000 buy Prize Catch (Zoffany x Abalone by Bluebird) provided his former Coolmore shuttler sire with his 25th stakes winner.

The 2017 WA Derby (Gr 2, 2400m) winner Gatting, having his first start since winning the Swan River Vase (2200m) at Belmont in July was a surprise first up winner here. He settled in fifth place on the rails, behind a steady pace, before improving between runners nearing the home turn. He got a split at the 200m and finished too well to score quite comfortably at the post. Achernar Star raced in fourth (one out and one back), moved up coming to the home turn, got to a narrow at the 100m but could not hold off the late-closing winner to take second. Great Shot went to the front as expected and then slowed the pace (first 800m 49.72). He was challenged on straightening and kept battling on well for third. The favourite Enticing Star suffered her first defeat in nine starts. She raced in last place in the eight-horse field, fanned deep approaching the home turn but was under riding at the pace picked up. She then made some ground in the sprint home for (3.3 lengths) sixth, without threatening.
