A-League: Finals underway with big double-header

3 minute read

The A-League Finals get underway this weekend with Sydney FC and Macarthur FC going head-to-head, while Victory and City also clash in a Melbourne derby.

Following another hectic season, we have reached the business end of it, and first-up is an 'Elimination Final' double-header.

There is no second chance for these four teams. The loser will see their campaign come to an abrupt end, while the winners will progress to the semi-finals, and a step closer to the grand final.

Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix will be waiting for the winners, but for now all eyes are on the weekend.

Sydney and Macarthur will clash on Saturday, with Victory and City playing on Sunday, and both games are tough to call.

Sydney are the hot fancies to beat Macarthur, but this is finals football and the Bulls will be leaving everything out their on the pitch.

As for the derby, anything can happen, but we should be guaranteed fireworks.

Sydney hold no fear for Bulls

. What: Sydney FC v Macarthur FC
. Where: Allianz Stadium, Sydney
. When: 19:45 (AEST), Saturday 4th May 2024
. How to watch: Paramount+, 10Bold
. Odds: Sydney FC 1.45, Draw 4.75, Macarthur FC 6.50

There was nothing to separate the two sides at the end of the regular A-League campaign as they both finished on 41 points.

Sydney had a superior goal-difference so finished fourth on the ladder, with Macarthur one spot below in fifth.

But it was Macarthur that came out on top in both fixtures during the campaign, with Sydney failing to score a goal.

Macarthur won 1-0 on home soil at the end of April and also picked up a 2-0 victory when the two sides clashed at Allianz Stadium in December.

Indeed, Macarthur will have no fear heading to Allianz Stadium as they are unbeaten in their last three visits there.

They will need to pick themselves up though after suffering a 3-0 defeat against Wellington Phoenix at the weekend.

Sydney go into the game on the back of a resounding 7-1 victory against a Perth Glory side whose minds were on the beach some weeks ago.

Joe Lolley chipped in with a couple of goals and is priced at 6.00 to score the first or 2.30 to score at anytime.

The last two games have been tight but under 2.5 goals in the game is available at 3.25, while both teams to score is 1.50.

City on a roll

. What: Melbourne Victory v Melbourne City
. Where: AAMI Park, Melbourne
. When: 17:00 (AEST), Sunday 5th May 2024
. How to watch: Paramount+, 10Bold
. Odds: Melbourne Victory 2.40, Draw 3.60, Melbourne City 2.75

Melbourne Victory may have finished third on the ladder, but it is City who appear to have the momentum after scraping into sixth spot at the death.

City won their final three games of the season to take sixth, but Victory failed to win any of their last three, losing two and drawing one.

The two games in the regular season were tight, with Victory winning 2-1 on home soil, while the other finished goalless.

Over 2.5 goals on Sunday is priced at 1.66, while both teams to score is 1.57.

There will be plenty of attacking talent on show and City striker Jamie MacLaren will be looking to go out on a high after announcing he will leave the club at the end of the season.

MacLaren is 5.00 to score the first goal or 2.30 to score at anytime.

Victory striker Bruno Fornaroli is the same price and has been a revelation this season when firing home 18 goals.
