Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney and provincial barrier trials at Randwick (December 7), Newcastle (December 7), Hawkesbury (December 13) and Rosehill (December 14).
ROSEHILL December 14
Inside Grass; Good 4
14 Heats – 3 x 1030m (1 Open; 2 Maiden); 11 x 900m (4 2YO; 2 Open; 1 3YO; 4 Maiden)
Plenty of depth in this session with the focus on several contenders for the Magic Millions races at the Gold Coast.
AND WE DANCED (Chris Waller): New addition to the premier stable from NZ where this Wrote filly had just three starts including a debut win at Hastings last season. Never put under pressure but there was a lot of quality in the way she closed late for an impressive third in a strong 900m heat (55.07; 34.49) won by the quality colt KING OF SPARTA. Keen to follow her progress.

BRIGHT BLUE SKY (Jamie Richards): Top NZ stable has shown plenty of confidence in this Fastnet Rock filly by bringing her straight to Australia off her debut win at Te Rapa last month. Really looked the part working to the line from the off the pace under a kind ride for an impressive third in her 900m heat (54.76; 34.85) that says she will measure up to the local youngsters.
A nice first trial from Written Tycoon filly Dame Cartland (@GaiWaterhouse1 & Adrian Bott) to win a 2yo trial at Rosehill on Tuesday from Madame Pommery (No Nay Never) and @TeAkauRacing filly Bright Blue Sky in third. @tabcomau pic.twitter.com/XrxgBWJShR

RUSSIAN CONQUEST (Peter & Paul Snowden): Finished second in the fastest 900m heat of the morning (54.29; 34.64) won by the Gimcrack Stakes placed filly PANTONARIO but lost no standing as a genuine Magic Millions contender with her strong work over the last 100m. The winner was just a bit sharper over the distance but this filly has certainly come on from her excellent debut win at Newcastle.

VENGEFUL (Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou): First trial by this Counterattack gelding stamped him as one out of the box. Showed excellent natural speed to open up a big lead and impressed by the way he ran out his 900m heat for an easy win by almost five lengths in fast time (54.32; 34.89). It's the type of speed that wins races.
In the three heats over 1030m the Waller-trained TIDAL CREEK, an unraced 3YOI by Snitzel, clocked the fastest time (61.94; 34.92) as he cleared out to an easy 4.6 lengths win. He had been beaten by six lengths or more in six previous trials that gave no hint of this ability, so make of it what you will.

The best performance in the 1030m heats was the close second by the talented filly SHIHONKA in the open trial won by the classy Adelaide sprinter BEAU ROSSA (62.09; 34.62). The winner was pushed out to take advantage of a rails run over the last 250m while SHIHONKA cruised in second outside the lead and went to the line with plenty to offer, confirming she has held her form since her last start win at Rosehill.

HAWKESBURY December 13
Inside Grass; Soft 7
14 Heats – 5 x 1000m (2 Open; 3 Maiden); 9 x 800m (3 2YO; 1 Open; 5 Maiden)
As usual the presence of numerous Godolphin runners added interest to a standard set of trials.
The Godolphin runners included easy trials from their classy trio KEMENTARI, ROHERYN and ISAURIAN but the real value will come from some noted efforts by their maidens and unraced 2YOs.
We have listed a trio of their maidens MR WALLACE (fast 800m heat win – 46.85; 33.51), BECKONS and INDIFFERENCE and also liked promising trials by their 2YOs BARANI and NORTHUMBRIA.

RANDWICK December 7
A Grass/Polytrack; Good 4
15 Heats – A Grass 1 x 1200m (Open); 7 x 1050m (2 Open; 2 F & M; 3 Maiden); 6 x 740m (3 2YO; 1 Open; 2 Maiden); 1 Polytrack 1 x 1080m (Open)
The youngsters grabbed the spotlight with a classy win by the boom filly Coolangatta and a stunning debut trial by the unraced Asteria.
COOLANGATTA (Ciaran Maher.David Eustace): The brilliant Gimcrack winner gave another display of her talent when she took on older maiden rivals in a heat for fillies and mares over 1050m. While her time (64.27; 34.37) was standard compared to other heats she was always in control under a kind ride from Tommy Berry. She sat third to the turn before cruising past the leaders and was then never off the leash to score by 0.58 lengths, a margin that flattered her rivals as she gave the impression she would have exploded away from them if asked for an effort.

ASTERIA (Mark Newnham): Could be another standout filly for boom sire Capitalist. This was her first trial and she left no doubt about her natural talent as she sped to a big lead in her 740m heat under no pressure. Kept running sweetly to clock the fastest time of the six heats (43.25; 33.11) with plenty in reserve.

Other sharp winners in the 1050m heats included the promising maiden PUBLICIST (62.93; 35.37), BULLETIN (62.83; 34.46) and COSTLY (63.47; 34.83). Runners to take the eye with their efforts in the 1050m heats included TANKER, AUSBRED FLIRT, ALL ENGLAND and CRIME SPREE.

14 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 5 x 1000m (2 Open; 3 Maiden); 8 x 800m (1 2YO; 3 Open; 4 Maiden)
The short course specialist REMLAP's GEM provided the highlight of a standard session with a typical fast performance in his 800m heat.
All his six wins have been over 900m and 1000m and he is in the right form to add to that record when placed under the right conditions after speeding to a 5.3 lengths win in the fastest time of the session (47.96; 33.30).
CAFE ROYAL is another good class performer who trialled strongly to finish second in his 800m heat won by ELECTED (48.67; 34.28) in his first appearance since July. Covered plenty of ground but was always under a good hold and should perform well fresh.
IMPULSE CONTROL and stablemate VIENNA ROYAL stood out with their 1-2 finish in the fastest 1000m heat (59.10; 34.80) while STARBORETA looks ready for success after a strong win with plenty to offer in her maiden heat (61.39; 35.11).
