ROSEHILL January 31

Course Proper/Inside Grass – Good 4

17 Heats – Course Proper 1 x 1000m (Group/Listed); 2 x 900m (Group Listed)

Inside Grass – 14 Heats 3 x 1030m (3 Open); 11 x 900m (2 Open; 5 2YO; 2 3YO; 2 Maiden)

Nature Strip…Home Affairs…Verry Elleegant….Zaaki….etc etc. You know the best racing will soon be with us when 29 black type stars contest three trials on the course proper at Rosehill.

And that wasn't then end of it – there were plenty of other classy carnival contenders on show in the other 14 heats run on the inside grass that will make this set of trials an important guide to the early autumn.

GROUP/LISTED TRIALS

HEAT 1 (1000m; 60.43; 35.06): The pacy RIODINI, with the benefit of a recent trial behind him, showed his usual gate speed to race to a big lead in the middle stages. At the finish he had less than a length to spare over I AM SUPERMAN, who closed best from six lengths off the pace in a perfect start to his prep. MIRRA VISION also worked strongly to the line for a close third. As is the norm with these classy trials the majority were having only conditioning exercise with their riders content to hold their positions through the trial. THINK IT OVER and HUNGRY HEART were ridden closer and were more competitive in this heat than in their first trials two weeks ago while VERRY ELLEEGANT did her own thing out the back with James McDonald applying no pressure in the run home. It was standard work from the others that included ICEBATH, MONETFILIA and KOLDING.

HEAT 2 (900m; 53.83; 34.39): The free running EMBRACER made this a genuine trial by setting a solid pace and was pushed along to win the heat by 1.75 lengths. The hulking HOME AFFAIRS settled second and was under an iron grip from James McDonald through the trial, finishing a strong second with plenty in reserve. The good filly MALLORY gets a pass mark with her sound third while FOUR MOVES AHEAD gets the big tick for her stylish work from off the pace over the last 100m to finish fourth. SHARED AMBITION and LAW OF INDICES also go into their work over the last 50 metres to run strongly though the line while ZAAKI was ridden with no intent in his comeback trial and will obviously be improved by the workout.

HEAT 3 (900m; 53.37; 34.39): It's rare to see NATURE STRIP beaten in a trial so full marks to the good sprinter WILD RULER edging him out in the fastest of the two 900m heats. NATURE STRIP took up the running after 100m with WILD RULER trucking behind him in his slipstream and the boom filly ESPIONA settling five lengths back on the inside. NATURE STRIP was wearing his ear muffs with James McDonald sitting as cold as a statue when WILD PLANET levelled up on his outside over the last 150m. Sam Clipperton also gave WILD RULER a kind ride as he got the upper hand in the last bounds to win the heat by less than a head with nobody missing the closing effort of the unbeaten ESPIONA to finish third less than a length away. The import TOP RANKED was a creditable fourth after covering the most ground while HINGED and MO'UNGA were getting into their work in good style over the last 100m under easy rides.

INSIDE GRASS

MAOTAI (Kacy Fogden): This sharp Queensland colt set the time standard in the three open heats over 1030m (61.36; 34.29) with a resounding win that indicates he has improved since his Sydney visit in the spring when he fell short of the best 3YOs. Pulled his way to the front after 200m and was five clear turning for home under a big hold from Sam Clipperton. Never asked to extend over the last 200m to score by more than two lengths, the style of his work pointing to a bold showing first-up.

METALLICITY (Peter & Paul Snowden): No 2YO has been trialling better in Sydney over the summer than this imposing youngster recording two super trial wins on December 21 and January 4 that had him set to make his race debut before a hiccup forced a change of plans. This 900m trial win (54.96; 35.03) dispelled any concerns about his condition as he tracked the speed behind the leaders and was doing it easily before railing up in the last 100m with classy acceleration to win the trial. Everything about him says he's top class.

BIONIC (Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou): In the maiden heats this unraced I Am Invincible colt produced a standout performance. His closing effort to work home from last for third in the fastest 900m heat of the day (53.63; 34.476) won by ARMED TO THE TEETH was an excellent start to his career. Keen to follow his progress.

The fastest time in the five 2YO heats over 900m (53.89; 34.84) was recorded by the Mark Newnham-trained SEVEN VEILS, an unraced Shalaa filly who went into the blackbook when she won her first trial in the spring. She is possessed with ample natural speed that makes her a ready type for a short course juvenile race.

Among the unraced youngsters to take the eye in their 2YO heats were LOMANDRA, BROSNAN and BOYFRIEND.

The classy Group winner HILAL did enough to win his 900m trial for 3YO males in slow time (55.34; 34.62) and should take plenty of improvement from the hitout. The Waller pair CAPE BRETON and RANCH HAND were given easy trials behind him.

Waller also has a nice filly in VIVID FLASH, winner of her 3YO fillies heat in much faster time (54.61; 34.90). She dictated her trial without much effort and looks capable of building on her smart Gold Coast win on debut in September.

The Waller stablemates BARRICHELLO and GECKO COIN captured attention with their strong efforts in the maiden heat won by DALCHINI (54.26; 34.84).
