TRIAL POINTERS

WARWICK FARM February 4: The Group and Listed heat over 900m was run in slow time (54.15; 34.28) but underlined the quality of John O'Shea's autumn team. His rising star QUANTICO made ground from the rear and was given a push along by James McDonald over the last 200m to get the better of stablemate LOST AND RUNNING. No doubt the second horse could have won the trial if Hugh Bowman had called on him for a serious effort. The third placegetter JAMAEA also had plenty in reserve, her trial confirming she has come on nicely since her trip to the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast. There was no intent to put PROMISE OF SUCCESS into the trial as she worked quietly doing their best through the line. In the black type heat over 1000m (61.43; 34.63) the lightly-raced Zoustar filly ZOUZARELLA took control from the start and from there it was a pedestrian trial. She dictated the pace and extended easily over the last 200m to win the heat by 1.75 lengths, good enough to suggest she will perform well fresh. The fastest 900m heat of the morning by a long way was recorded by MATOWATAKPE (51.23; 33.23), who had to trial to satisfy a stewards embargo after he failed to perform in his most recent start at Rosehill on January 29. With blinkers on it was handle bars down from the start with Brandon Lerena riding him out of the gates, giving a crack with the whip and then letting him run to lead by eight lengths after the first 400m. He kept up the gallop all the way to the line to win the heat by 13 lengths, obviously gaining a clearance from the stewards to continue racing. The Hawkes stable have handled the high priced Snitzel colt MAGIC patiently. He has now been placed in his three trials and could be a big improver under race conditions.

HAWKESBURY February 1: MAGIC CARPET posted the fastest time (46.03; 33.21) in the four 2YO heats over 800m and made the best impression as he did it with style with a surging finish from off the pace. GREEN LEGEND is an above average maiden whose five trials have been in stark contrast to his two career performances to date. He posted the fastest time of the morning with a dominant 2.3 lengths win in his 800m heat (45.48; 33.03). Sat off the speed but easily went up a gear over the last 150m to put them away like a good horse. Choisir filly TEMPESTAS failed at her only race start but this was her second trial win and the speed she displayed to lead by eight lengths says she must be competitive in a suitable maiden. Coasted home by 6.5 lengths in fast time (45.63; 32.83).

ROSEHILL January 31: No 2YO has been trialling better in Sydney over the summer than imposing youngster METALLICITY. This 900m trial win (54.96; 35.03) dispelled any concerns about his condition as he tracked the speed behind the leaders and was doing it easily before railing up in the last 100m with classy acceleration to win the trial. Everything about him says he's top class. In the Group/Listed trial over 1000m won by the pacy Riodini (60.43; 35.06) the runner-up I AM SUPERMAN closed best from six lengths off the pace in a perfect start to his prep. MIRRA VISION also worked strongly to the line for a close third. In the first black type heat over 900m the good filly MALLORY was a sound third while FOUR MOVES AHEAD gets the big tick for her stylish work from off the pace over the last 100m to finish fourth. In the other 900m heat (53.37; 34.39) nobody missed the closing effort of the unbeaten ESPIONA to finish third less than a length behind Wild Ruler and Nature Strip. Chris Waller has a nice filly in VIVID FLASH, winner of her 3YO fillies heat (54.61; 34.90). She dictated without much effort and looks capable of building on her smart Gold Coast win on debut in September.

RANDWICK January 24: Really like the way BOUND TO WIN is going in preparation for her return after a long break. This was her second trial and after being quietly ridden at the rear in her 1050m heat (64.07; 34.27) she was taken widest at the 400m to work home over the top of her rivals for soft win under a kind ride. Expect her to perform boldly fresh. Class act LOST AND RUNNING was in good form for his first trial since November, winning the second of the two black type heats over 900m in good time for the session (54.14; 34.42). Hugh Bowman allowed him to work into the trial three and four wide from the 600m before he extended nicely under no pressure to get the better of the leaders over the last 200m, going through the line with plenty in hand. In the fastest 743m heat won by subsequent Inglis Millenmium winner Xtravagant Star the runner-up MISS FABERGE surged late from off the speed for an impressive second. The fastest 1050m heat on the A Grass saw a last to first finish by the good mare LE GAI SOLEIL (63.72; 34.81), a fast pace setting her up to surge to the line in the last 100m.

WARWICK FARM January 20: In the Group heat over 800m (49.02; 34.96) the luckless mare ICEBATH was an excellent second, working home from midfield under no pressure. Exciting sprinter QUANTICO also took the eye with his late work through the line to finish a close sixth. PROMISE OF SUCCESS beat only one rival to the line in her open heat over 795m but it was the manner of her trial that could not be missed as it was obvious she was sent out to work over 1000m. Hugh Bowman allowed this potential Group winner to settle last, seven lengths from the lead, before easing widest turning for home. He sat quietly until the last 50m when he gave her the slightest squeeze that brought an immediate response. She closed quickly to be beaten less than three lengths and then worked strongly for another 200m past the post. In the maiden heats over 789m an impressive win in fast time by GREEN LEGEND (47.12; 34.06) stamped him as a coming winner. His trials have shown he has much more ability than the form he produced in two race starts last year.

ROSEHILL January 17: A heat over 900m for black type 3YOs (55.92; 35.11) the quality filly MALLORY bounded out of the gates to lead and was always in control to run out an impressive winner by more than two lengths. High class fillies ESPIONA and FANGIRL were having easy exercise, putting in their best work late.

RANDWICK January 13: With all trials on the Polytrack FOUR MOVES AHEAD was the class act of the session and didn't disappoint, settling three lengths off a pack of leaders in her 780m heat before cruising into the trial three and four wide on the turn. She picked them under no pressure over the last 50 metres and went through the line hard held in good time (45.79; 33.04), suggesting she will be well primed for the early Group races for fillies.

ROSEHILL January 4: Another hot trial from the impressive Zoustar colt METALLICITY confirming the talent he displayed in his debut trial win at Canterbury on December 21. Settled kindly a couple of lengths of the leaders before getting into his work over the last 200m to easily round them up and run to the line powerfully under a quiet ride, posting the fastest 900m heat win (53.56; 34.79) among the four 2YO trials. Obviously packs the talent to match his looks.

CANTERBURY December 21: METALLICITY settled one out and one back in his trial over 890m before letting down with a big striding action for a dominant win in the fastest of the five 2YO heats (55.29; 35.78). Has the talent to match his robust looks.
