RANDWICK February 7

Course Proper/A Grass; 13 Heats; Soft 7

Course Proper – 1 x 1000m (Group/Listed); 1 x 900m (Group/Listed)

A Grass – 1 x 1200m (Open); 6 x 1050m (2 Open; 1 2YO; 3 Maiden); 4 x 735m (1 Open; 2 2YO; 1 Maiden)

More black type heats featured a couple of autumn contenders with big question marks hanging over them.

Gun sprinter EDUARDO competed in a short course trial on the A grass and did as much as was needed to win his heat.

GROUP/LISTED

HEAT 1 (1000m; 59.70; 35.48): Nothing to enthuse about with LE LUDE showing more dash than she normally does in her races to lead SHOUT THE BAR and box on for a solid win. Best trial came from ROCHA CLOCK working to the line nicely from off the pace for third.

HEAT 2 (900m; 54.08; 35.25): This trial had more depth with all the interest in the performance of the enigmatic ALLIGATOR BLOOD in his first trial since his latest stable switch to the Waterhouse/Bott team. He was given a solid hitout to lead but was ridden along over the last 200m with the quality mare MINHAAJ working to the line in better style to win the heat. She is primed to go fresh after two good trials while judgement is reserved on ALLIGATOR BLOOD'S prospects until he puts in a more positive performance. BIG PARADE was restrained to sit wide outside the pace and was OK finishing a solid third while SEPTEMBER RUN was beaten more than six lengths in a performance that provided no real guide to just where she sits heading into the autumn. Hard to enthuse off this trial as it's been 16 months since her G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes win and she has been placed only twice in her nine subsequent starts.

A GRASS

EDUARDO (Joe Pride): Strong trials from this crack sprinter and the runner-up SPLINTEX. The latter held the inside running in their 735m heat (43.87; 33.79) with EDUARDO sitting three wide on the outside. Their riders kept them under big holds all the way to the line with EDUARDO doing just enough to get the better of SPLINTEX with both sprinters having plenty in reserve.

KALASHNIKOV (Peter & Paul Snowden):  Unraced since last year's Golden Slipper, the Black Opal Stakes winner is ticking over nicely for his overdue return. This was his second trial and he was dominant surging away from his rivals over the last 200m to win by almost four lengths in easily the fastest of the six heats over 1050m (62.12; 34.58). Top stable have him well prepared to make up for lost time.

In the 2YO heats the focus was on the Snowden-trained filly EBHAAR after her abject first-up failure in the Widden Stakes at Rosehill. She showed her expected pace to narrowly win her 1050m heat (63.30; 35.96) but it was hardly a convincing performance as the closing sectionals were slow and she didn't have a lot up her sleeve. It was an effort that failed to raise confidence about her prospects against the top youngsters.

Her unraced stablemate ALPHA ONE produced the best 2YO trial of the session winning his first trial over 735m in the fastest time (43.30; 33.42) of the morning. The Super One colt jumped straight into the bridle to lead and was strong through the line under a kind ride.
