RANDWICK March 3

Polytrack; Synthetric

17 Heats – 10 x 1080m (6 Open; 2 2YO; 2 Maiden); 7 x 780m ((1 Open; 4 2YO; 2 Maiden)

The value of all weather synthetic tracks when severe weather disrupts racing should never be under estimated. Plenty of runners here would have had their preps for the carnival affected if these trials had been cancelled.

IN THE CONGO (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): Strong second trial from the Golden Rose winner, leading and working through his gears for a soft win in his 1080m heat (64.74; 34.62). Interested to see what program they follow with this Snitzel colt. The good mare CALIFORNIA ZIMBOL also impressed working to the line from the rear for a strong second after being held up across heels at the 300m.

STEINEM (Ciaron Maher/David Eustace): Interesting to see this classy imported Frankel mare turn up in Sydney. She has excellent Group form up to 1600m and her impressive second in her 1080m heat won by TOO MUCH CAVIAR augers well for her coming campaign despite the slow time (65.50; 34.31).

EXOBOOM (Peter and Paul Snowden): First outing since he ran in the Villiers in December. Always had control of his 1080m heat and looked to have plenty in reserve holding his rivals in the run to the line (64.86; 34.68).

SATIN RIBBONS (Peter and Paul Snowden): Fast mare showed her usual speed to post the quickest 780m heat win (45.07; 33.02) in her first trial since November. She was too quick over the short course for the well performed BLAZING MISS, underlining that she will take catching in any sprint up to 1000m – beyond that is a worry!

ZEMINNIKA (Peter and Paul Snowden): A really nice debut trial from this unraced Zoustar filly to win her 780m heat in good time (46.27; 33.95), travelling easily on the bit and winning by a soft 1.3 lengths with something in hand.

EMBRACER rebounded from a recent flop with the fastest 1080m heat win (63.99; 34.23) but was later found to have bled and is now banned for the mandatory three months. The trial of note came from the honest sprinter SIGNORE FOX breezing home from last in his first trial since December. He's a second tier Group performer but there could be a suitable sprint for him over the autumn.

The race fit last start winner CAPE BRETON showed he is holding his form well with a comfortable win in his 1080m heat (64.14; 35.06) where the effort of the unbeaten THIS'LLBETHEONE, winner of two provincial starts in  November, really took the eye with Tommy Berry swinging to him as he worked through the line for an impressive third.

The maiden heat win over 1080m by the wayward STAR PATROL has to be noted as he speared to the outside fence before the turn despite the efforts of Josh Parr but still had the field covered coming down the near side rail (64.98; 34.81). He's been placed in three of his six starts and obviously has the ability but he's now been suspended or warned four times in Queensland and NSW for his barrier and racing manners. He's now under another ban until he performs to the satisfaction of stewards in another trial.

ATISHU, another performer under a ban after her "Chautauqua act" at Randwick, satisfied stewards with her trial performance after she jumped cleanly in her 1080m heat. No intent to compete and worked nicely to the line – she's going well!

WARWICK FARM February 28

Polytrack; Synthetic

17 Heats – 3 x 1175 (3 Open); 14 x 740m (7 Open; 4 2YO; 1 3YO; 2 Maiden)

A big session of trials on the synthetic polytrack track were lifted above the norm by the presence of several Group stars including Profondo, Private Eye and Remarque.

Note the first half of the session had the best conditions with rain falling during the later heats. While the synthetic track was unaffected some heats were run in difficult conditions.

PROFONDO (Richard Litt): No doubt this big talent is in a good place ahead of his autumn campaign. Improved nicely off his strong first up trial to control his 1175m heat (71.96; 34.75), sitting outside the leader and extending sweetly as he sprinted to the line for a soft win.

REMARQUE (Hawkes Racing): Another topliner showing he is in the right form for the start of his autumn campaign after his sharp comeback trial win at Rosehill on February 21. Went on with it here to win his 740m heat easily (44.57; 34.40) over lesser rivals but doing it in style with his late work the best part of his trial.

I AM ME (Ciaran Maher/David Eustace): Nice improvement by this I Am Invincible filly from her noted trial on February 14. She was placed in two of her first three starts in the spring and should soon drop her maiden status going on the speed she displayed to win her fast 740m heat (43.75; 33.35) by almost eight lengths. She slipped along easily and her economical action suggested she could have gone quicker.

PRIVATE EYE worked in similar style to his first-up trial, tracking the field and working to the line easily for a soft fourth in the 740m heat won by the pacy SPACEBOY (44.81; 34.27).

ON THE LEAD posted the fastest 740m heat win (43.48; 33.25) with a strong come from behind win in her heat.

NOTED TRIALS

XX I Am Me; Profondo; Remarque

X Andermatt; Essone; Fine Vintage; In Secret; On The Lead; Private Eye; Salizada; Secaution; Shohei; Son Of Sampson; Seiryu; Spaceboy; Thalassophile; Tip Top Timing.

WYONG February 25

Course Proper; Soft 7

19 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 8 x 1000m (5 Open; 3 Maiden); 10x 845m (3 Open; 3 Maiden; 4 2YO)

The open heats featured several better class performers from strong Central Coast and Newcastle stables.

Kim Waugh would have been pleased with a big win by FRENCH BONNET (58.54; 33.41 ) and strong placings from her stable stars GREAT NEWS and TRUMBULL in 1000m heats to open their new campaigns.

ZOROCAT (58.09; 33.92) recorded the fastest 1000m heat win while Grant Allard's smart MAJESTIC SHOT recorded another impressive trial win (59.52; 33.74) and is obviously set for a first-up win.

In the heats over 845m the fastest time was posted by the 2YO winner FLORIDA SKY (49.01; 33.26), running home under a ride to beat a quietly ridden WEALTHY INVESTOR. WILLINGA BEAST (50.55; 34.23) was another 2YO heat winner to impress with a strong drive to the line after copping a big bump at the 200m from a wayward rival.

CATESBY (49.82; 33.18) took the honours in the three open heats over 845m. Maidens to make an impression included the 100m heat winners GRAPHITE MIST (60.57; 35.36) and PROPEL MOTION (59.51; 34.77) and the 845m heat winners DIFFERENT ROAD (49.90; 33.54) and RAPID RESPONSE (50.51; 34.23).

NOTED TRIALS

X Catesby; D'Arpano; Different Road; Great News; Florida Sky; French Bonnet; Glowing Red; Graphite Mist; Majestic Shot; Oakfield Twilight; Propel Motion; Rapid Response; Trumbull; Wealthy Investor; Willinga Beast; Zorocat.
