ROSEHILL March 22

Inside Grass; Heavy 8

14 Heats – 4 x 1030m (2 Open; 2 2 & 3YO); 10 x 900m (4 Open; 4 2YO; 2 Maiden)

A brilliant trial in the heavy conditions by the flying Queenslander MAOTAI was the highlight of a strong session that had plenty of depth.

APRIL RAIN (Chris Waller): The punctuated career of this mare is back on track judging by her strong fifth in her 900m trial won by the talented filly HERESY in good time (54.88; 35.17). As usual the big grey showed no early speed before working into the trial from the 400m under a cold ride by Tommy Berry. Went to the line untested as she ran out of room over the last 50 metres when just starting to extend but her effort ticked all the boxes – surely it's time for her to live up to her early promise. The winner showed an excellent turn of foot to come from off the speed and sprint to the line easily for a soft win.

CAPTAIN BOND (Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou): This unraced Capitalist colt went into the blackbook when he won his first trial in December and this impressive win in the fastest 900m heat of the morning (54.75; 35.34) confirms his talent. Travelled easily sitting off the leader before stamping his class on the heat with sweet acceleration to stride clear and run freely to the line under no pressure. Ready to make an impact on debut.

GINGER'S GAL (Bjorn Baker): Trial watchers are getting toey waiting for this Exceed And Excel filly to make her debut. Sher's now unbeaten in four trials since October and surely she is ready to go the races after coasting through her 900m heat for another impressive win (55.16; 35.47). She had control form the start and was never under any pressure to extend and win the heat by a soft 2.8 lengths.

MAOTAI (Kacy Fogden): Wow! What more can you say about the speed this flier displayed to win his 1050m heat by almost 11 lengths that could have been much more. He simply pulled his way to a 12 lengths lead between the 800m and 400m in a speed display that says he will test any field up to 1200m. The clock tells the story as he recorded a flying 61.41 in the heavy ground (next best over the distance was 63.27) and his last 600m in 34.25 was easily the fastest sectional of the 14 heats.

The Snowden stable won both combined heats for the 2 and 3YOs over 1050m with unraced youngsters LIBERTAAR (63.91; 36.57) and CZAR (63.27; 35.93). Both have had four trials and the strong work by each over the last 200m has them ready to go the races.

Watch for a bold showing over the carnival from the Chris Waller-trained 2YO colt SHOWCOURT after his strong win in his juvenile heat over 900m (55.17; 35.64). He was a luckless fourth in the Todman Stakes at only his second race start and this trial has him primed to perform in a race like the Sires Produce.

There was plenty of depth in the two maiden heats over 900m won in good style by MAROONIYAH (55.22; 35.20) and DIDRIKSON (55.12; 35.72). Keep an eye on ANTONIO GIOVANNI, BLUESKIN, PODIUM and WASSERMAN.
