ROSEHILL August 23

Inside Grass; Good 4

11 Heats – 4 x 1030m (2 Open; 2 Maiden); 7 x 900m (3 Open; 1 3YO; 3 Maiden)

Crack sprinters MAZU and MASKED CRUSADER commanded all the attention as they eased their way into the start of their spring campaigns.

The duo contested a strong open heat over 900m that was won by the free running O'PRESIDENT (53.00; 33.47) in his first trial for his new trainer Bjorn Baker and also featured such notables as MR MOZART, ELLSBERG and SHEEZA BELTER.

Baker likes to see his horses run in their trials and that was the case with O'PRESIDENT as he was all business leading from the start and recording the fastest time in seven heats over 900m.

But all eyes were on MAZU working well within himself in his first appearance since he completed his rise to the top shelf with his win in the Doomben Ten Thousand in May. Although beaten 3.25 lengths there was no intent to chase the winner and it was a more than adequate start with so much ahead of him in the next three months.

MASKED CRUSADER didn't run to his best in the autumn but he looked in good order hitting the line best from off the pace for a strong third.

The stars of the morning were the classy pair YEARNING and REMARQUE.

YEARNING (Hawkes Racing): Last spring's Thousand Guineas winner looked in great order finishing second in her 1030m heat won by the lightly raced ANOTHER ALIBI (63.06; 34.37). She dropped back to last under a quiet ride from Willie Pike before railing through from the 400m with a classy surge that carried her past the bulk of the field in a matter of strides. Stretched out freely under no pressure in a sure sign she has come up in good form.

REMARQUE (Hawkes Racing): He's still won only one race from seven starts but nobody doubts he has the talent to win good races. He's been a hype horse from day one and a lot of that is due to his barrier trial form as he has now won eight of his nine trials since he was a 2YO. This effort was no exception as he cruised home in his 900m heat (53.73; 33.30) by 4.5 lengths with plenty in reserve, again raising hopes that this could be his best prep.

Another smart Hawkes-trained prospect CLEMENCEAU also worked nicely to win his 900m heat in slower time (54.82; 34.97). It was a good morning overall for the stable with some excellent trials from their lesser lights including the maidens POETIC DRAMA, SIR MING, SHOEHEI and NICKELBACK.

Chris Waller had the biggest number of runners over the 11 heats but won only the one 900m trial with the maiden DEMIANA (54.29; 34.96), not surprising as the majority of his team were having tick over conditioning work and were not asked to compete under quiet rides. Among his runners to take the eye were WICKLOW, VIVID FLASH, STARMAN, DEMOCRACY MANIFEST and LINDERMANN.

HAWKESBURY August 22

Course Proper/Inside Grass; Good 4

17 Heats – Course Proper 1 x 1000m (Group/Listed); Inside Grass 1 x 1250m (Open); 5 x 1000m (2 Open; 3 Maiden); 10 x 800m (2 Open; 8 Maiden)

An easy provincial trial for ZAAKI while ANDERMATT was the star among a big a team of runners from the Godolphin stable.

It was standard work for ZAAKI in his 1000m trial for Group horses on the course proper (59.67; 33.36) and it was no shock to see him edged out by WAR ETERNAL after they matched strides for the last 400m. James McDonald kept him under restraint in a trial that was obviously designed to be no more than conditioning exercise.

The take away from this trial has to be Godolphin's enigmatic ROHERYN. He finished a strong third and went just as well as ZAAKI without any pressure being applied to chase the lead pair from the turn.

ANDERMATT (James Cummings): This was the trial of the morning with this talented sprinter showing his class with a powerful last 200m to overhaul the running leader in the fastest 800m heat on the inside grass (47.36; 32.80) under a big hold from James McDonald. Lovely work that has him ready to run to his best fresh.

There was not a lot to enthuse about in the five 1000m heats on the inside grass where the fastest heat was won by SHAMEONUS (59.61; 33.21). There was some merit in the heat wins by MISS MADISON (60.95; 34.36) and the maidens DYSTOPIAN (60.84; 34.58) and SHADOWS OF LOVE (34.57).

A lot more to work with in the 800m trials where the good mare ADELONG showed her usual speed for a strong win over ITA in her open heat (47.91; 32.96) that augers well for her prospects first-up.

The maiden heats over 800m should throw up some worthy prospects. Liked the wins of RED CARD (47.99; 33.24), KAI TAK (47.70; 33.48), OUTLAWED (47.36; 33.08) and NORTHULDRA (47.59; 33.57) but there was plenty of merit in the efforts of other runners in these heats, especially the Godolphin team. They worked in typical style with plenty in reserve with eye catching trials from their maidens PARISAL, MOONFLOWER, SEQUESTERED and PEREILLE.
