ROSEHILL September 6

Inside Grass; Soft 6

13 Heats – 9 x 900m (4 Open; 5 Maiden); 4 x 1030m (2 Open; 2 Maiden)

Bjorn Baker's team won seven of the 13 heats, O'PRESIDENT stole the show in a strong open heat while Everest contender MAZU did all that was required to win his trial.

O'PRESIDENT (Bjorn Baker): He's flying for his new trainer with two big trial wins over 900m at Rosehill since his transfer from Chris Waller. Sped away from Mazu and Masked Crusader in his first win on August 23 and was even better this time leading by five after 200m, in front by 10 turning for home and eventually coasting home by more than 13 lengths, running more than two seconds faster than the next best time in the 900m heats (53.13; 33.63). His rivals were not asked to chase but any horse producing this type of trial is obviously in good form. And don't label him as a short course speedster as he is a winner up to 1400m.

MAZU (Peter & Paul Snowden): Improved off his first trial behind O'PRESIDENT with easy work to win the fastest 1100m heat (63.32; 35.40), doing all that was required to sit outside the leader MOUNT POPA and get the upper hand under an easy ride. Nice trial from the lesser performed DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM to cover ground and finish off for a strong second.

Bjorn Baker always likes to see his horses perform in trials and most of his team were sent out to run in their heats, resulting in seven wins. Apart from O'PRESIDENT he would have been pleased with the efforts of SHAMEONUS winning his 1100m heat (63.58; 35.59) and the 900m heat wins by his promising maidens LAROUPE (55.81; 35.44), KAI TAK (55.25; 35.23) and O'TYCOON (56.08; 35.28).

Other maidens to impress were the previously noted pair SHOHEI and NORTHULDRA finishing 1-2 in their 900m heat (55.59; 34.98) and PUNGO (55.15; 35.20) an unraced So You Think colt in the Waller stable.

NOTED TRIALS

XX O'President; Mazu

X Duke Of Buckingham; Kiss Sum; Laroupe; Mazu; Northuldra; O'Tycoon; Parisal; Pungo; Renaissance Woman; Rhettana; Shameonus; Shohei; Zougotcha

CANTERBURY September 1

Course Proper; Soft 7

10 Heats – 6 x 900m (5 Open; 1 3YO); 7 x 1100m (4 Open; 3 Maiden); 7 x 897m (7 Maiden)

He's back! Nature Strip made his reappearance after his return from the UK and it was like he had never been away!

The champion sprinter contested an open 900m heat that served as an early Everest preview as his rivals included OVERPASS, CLASSIQUE LEGEND and LOST AND RUNNING.

OVERPASS led on his own and ran time to clock the fastest 900m heat win (55.49; 36.65) but NATURE STRIP's work to finish an easy second under the softest rides from James McDonald was first class. He eased across to sit a length or two off the leader and looked in rude health, an ominous indicator that he has recovered well from his travels.

CLASSIQUE LEGEND gets a pass mark for his solid third in his first trial since last year's Everest. He is certain to take plenty of benefit from this hitout while LOST AND RUNNING worked through the line best of those behind the first pair.

MR MOZART (Hawkes Racing): A classy win in the fastest 1100m heat (69.55; 38.15), settling some six lengths off the leaders and making up three lengths over the last 200m to get the better of CROSS TALK with something in reserve. The runner-up also worked well within himself in what should prove a strong trial.

WRITTEN BEAUTY (Chris Waller): She's known for impressive trials and this one certainly took the eye even though she finished only fifth in a sharp 900m trial won by AUTHENTIC JEWEL (57.32; 37.96). She wasn't out to win the trial but it was hard to miss her strong work over the last 200m under no pressure from Hugh Bowman.

Other 1100m open heat winners to impress included WILLINGA RUFIO (71.06; 38.56) and SHADOW DEVIL (70.48; 38.46) while REMARQUE ((57.83; 37.63) and EMBELLER (59.26; 38.29) made good impressions in their 900m heat wins. Others to take the eye in the open heats included DIAMIL, ROCHA CLOCK, OSIPENKO and I AM LETHAL.

With 10 maiden heats there was a lot to digest. A couple of winners worth noting included MAGADAN, SMART AS SMART and MARTIAL MUSIC but the times were standard and I would prefer to see many of these maiden runners trial again on better ground.

NOTED TRIALS

X Authentic Jewel; Condrieu; Cross Talk; Diamil; Embeller; I Am Lethal; Magadan; Martial Music; Osipenko; Parmenio; Remarque; Rocha Clock; Shadow Devil; Smart As Smart; Tycoon Evie; Willinga Rufio
