Chris Scholtz previews the Randwick meeting on June 24 with best bets, value guide and selections for all races plus Trial Watch and Blackbook runners.

Best Bets

RACE 5 (5) DREAM HOUR: Ready to go one better after successive second placings over 1500m and 1600m under good weights in this class at his last two starts. Arguably could have won both those races with better luck and will strip a very fit horse for this assignment.

RACE 8 (15) KING OF HASTINGS: Shrewd move by the Victorian arm of the Freedman clan to give this 6YO gelding two Sydney trials before he resumed at this course two weeks ago when he showed positive signs of a form resurgence with his late closing third over 1300m after a luckless passage. Made his mark as a younger horse in better classes when winning six of his first 18 starts but lost his way after his last black type win in 2021. With a 4.5kg drop in weight from his last start I will take a leap of faith and bank that he is set to rekindle the flame.

RACE 10 (17) GREEN SHADOWS: This emergency acceptor heads the market and will be hard to beat if he gains a start after his strong first-up second over 1300m at this course a month ago when little went right for him in the run. Significantly that was his first start as a gelding and he stays on the same weight in the same class. An easy trial at Rosehill on Tuesday was just what he needed to top him off for this suitable target.

For Value

RACE 1 (9) SUPER BRIGHT (EW) - Good improvement second up to be beaten a nose over 1100m at Warwick Farm when finding the line nicely. Well placed to go on with it.

RACE 2 (14) LEGGY POINT (Value) - Improving filly posted her second win in six starts with an impressive six lengths score over 1300m at Scone. That form should hold up well in this company.

RACE 6 (7) SOPHIA'S MAGIC (Value) - Ex-Kiwi mare took the eye with a nice resuming third over 1400m after some easy trials. She was spelled after a 1900m win at Canterbury in February and expect her to make good improvement second up over this suitable distance. Save on stablemate (10) DARLINGTON COUNTY – another former Kiwi with a similar profile.

RACE 7: Expect emergencies (13) DEFICIT, (14) KING OF THE CASTLE and (15) BAZOOKA to play a big hand if they secure starts. Excellent sectionals from DEFICIT last time - right conditions for him to run to his best.

TRIAL POINTERS

RANDWICK June 13: Last start Rosehill winner COTEHELE showed he is in rude health, impressing with a strong finish under a soft ride to win his 1045m heat (64.97; 35.45) with stablemate WAIHAHA FALLS also finishing off in style for an easy third.

WARWICK FARM June 9:  ASTERO finished fourth in his open heat over 792m won by Rubiwish (47.14; 33.65) but it was an eye catching effort as he worked home under a cold ride from well off the pace and was extending nicely through the line. Looks set to carry on with the good form he has displayed through his autumn prep. The four 789m heats for 2YOs were even affairs with a notable win by RELATIVES (46.79; 34.05).
