TRIAL POINTERS

CANTERBURY August 1: The first black type heat over 902m (54.68; 32.98) contained six G1 winners with MADAME POMMERY taking the eye working through the line with good intent for an eager third. IKNOWASTAR was a brilliant winner of the second open heat over 902m. He was keen to run from the start with Rachel King letting him stride away from the pack to lead by a big space, a margin he maintained as he ran fast time over the last 400m to score by eight lengths (52.77; 32.98). EXTREMELY LUCKY could be a real star in the making for his new trainer with the former South Australian showing his class to work home strongly from last in the third 902m heat (53.42; 33.70) for an impressive third, backing up a similar performance when he was second at Rosehill in his first Sydney trial on July 21. PERICLES oozed class winning his 1100m heat (67.94; 34.35) in his first trial since the autumn. Settled three pairs back before James McDonald allowed him to work easily into the trial three and four wide from the 500m. McDonald sat cold as he joined the leaders, allowing him to cruise through the line for a soft win with a lot in hand. Sure to be a key spring player. Chris Waller is a keen supporter of Canterbury trials as all horses get use of the course proper. He won heats with the good filly OLENTIA and promising maiden CARRAZANA, a pair that can be followed with confidence.

RANDWICK July 28: GARZA BLANCA holds plenty of scope to improve on what he has done to date judging by sharp 1045m heat win in the fastest time over the distance (63.30; 35.04). Sat off the pace and gave the leaders several lengths start before showing a sharp turn of foot to sprint past them quickly and put the trial to bed. In the second balck type heat over 1000m the So You Think 4YO PERFECT THOUGHT did it nicely in front from the start, responding when called on and doing enough for a solid win (61.16; 35.22). He appeals as an ideal type for the Epsom Handicap and other good 1600-2000m races. In the third black type heat over 900m won by the G1 star Alligator Blood (54.82;34.95) CALL DI put in nice work late for a strong third.

WARWICK FARM July 24: More black type trials on the course proper. In Heat 1 over 900m tough gelding LOOKS LIKE ELVIS was revved up and made to sprint to the line over the last 300m for a strong win (54.06; 34.83). The 2YO heats in on the inner track created plenty of interest with plenty to like about the 798m heat win by NADAL (47.68; 34.56), an Xtravagant colt who has raced twice in Victoria for a Bendigo placing.

ROSEHILL July 21: Three heats on the course proper for black type performers. In Heat 3 over 900m the former SA-trained 4YO EXTREMELY LUCKY put in excellent work over the last 200m to finish second in his first appearance for the Waller stable. OLENTIA also had nice pipe opener to her preparation.

HAWKESBURY July 17: The depth in the Godolphin team for the coming season was obvious, winning six heats with some of their classiest young prospects from their current 2YO crop. The G3 winner BARBER was given time to settle off the pace in his fast run 800m heat (47.51; 33.15) while travelling wide before rounding them up under a soft ride. Made an impression with his strength through the line.

RANDWICK July 14: Keen to see Michael Freedman's unraced Snitzel colt MORAVIA get to the races after a classy trial win, coming from five lengths off the lead at the 300m to surge home over the top of the Gimcrack Stakes winner Platinum Jubilee in the fastest 742m heat (43.66; 33.44). He has now has four trials for two wins and two seconds and obviously is a youngster full of potential.

WARWICK FARM July 7: The better heat winners in the 2YO trials included the well performed THE INSTRUCTOR taking out his 792m heat with authority (47.37; 34.04)
