ROSEHILL August 12

Best Bets

RACE 1 - (2) CABBALUS: No surprise to see this million dollar colt come off the speed to win at Randwick after his luckless Canterbury debut. Posted excellent figures in a driving finish and is sure to be better over this longer distance with the right draw and jockey to stalk the leaders. Unfortunately he won't be the same generous odds as last time

RACE 9 - (4) KALINO: Appeals as the right horse in the right race at the right time after adding to his excellent Rosehill record with a classy first-up win over 1300m on July 22 under 60kg when he had to change course at a vital stage. This field holds no fears as he's measured up well in Group races in the past and can exploit his race fitness with a handy 4kg drop in weight from his last start.

RACE 10 – (13) SMASHING EAGLE: Not much has gone the way of this lightly raced 5YO in three starts since a stable switch with his last start third over 1100m at Randwick one of out of the box as he surged to the line from a hopeless position, posting the race's fastest last 600m and quickest last 200m of the day. Rates to win with 2kg weight relief from his last start - just needs things to go his way at the right time.

Why they can win….

RACE 2 - (9) ELETTRICA: Should have won in this class last time. Similar set up gives her the chance to go one better.

RACE 3 - (5) WINEGLASS BAY: Set to peak third up with the key addition of blinkers. Stifles betting after early scratchings.

RACE 4 - (8) TAGS: Impressive closing sectionals despite traffic problems in his two runs since resuming. Extra trip gives him his chance.

RACE 5 - (6) DEVIL'S THROAT: Excellent wins this track before his Ramornie run where he had excuses. Set to rebound off a strong trial win.

RACE 6 - (6) AFRICAN DAISY: Honest mare with an excellent record at this course. Should get every chance from the rails draw.

RACE 7 - (5) FREEDOM RALLY: Progressive Queenslander has posted impressive figures winning four on the bounce. Well up to this class.

RACE 8 - (5) CIGAR FLICK: The Waller elect has a fitness edge coming off her driving first-up win at Randwick. Suited by expected strong pace.

TRIAL POINTERS

WARWICK FARM August 4: Dare say TIZ INVINCIBLE is the best maiden filly in Sydney after her two autumn starts saw her finish a debut fourth as favourite in the Black Opal and second in the G2 Percy Sykes at Randwick. Looked a class above her rivals in her 810m heat (47.71; 33.74), sitting wide off the pace early and making the turn six deep before extending easily to put the trial to bed under no pressure from James McDonald.

CANTERBURY August 1: The first black type heat over 902m (54.68; 32.98) contained six G1 winners with MADAME POMMERY taking the eye working through the line with good intent for an eager third. EXTREMELY LUCKY could be a real star in the making for his new trainer with the former South Australian showing his class to work home strongly from last in the third 902m heat (53.42; 33.70) for an impressive third, backing up a similar performance when he was second at Rosehill in his first Sydney trial on July 21. PERICLES oozed class winning his 1100m heat (67.94; 34.35) in his first trial since the autumn. Settled three pairs back before James McDonald allowed him to work easily into the trial three and four wide from the 500m. McDonald sat cold as he joined the leaders, allowing him to cruise through the line for a soft win with a lot in hand. Sure to be a key spring player. Chris Waller's heat winner OLENTIA can be followed with confidence.

RANDWICK July 28: GARZA BLANCA holds plenty of scope to improve on what he has done to date judging by sharp 1045m heat win in the fastest time over the distance (63.30; 35.04). Sat off the pace and gave the leaders several lengths start before showing a sharp turn of foot to sprint past them quickly and put the trial to bed. In the second balck type heat over 1000m the So You Think 4YO PERFECT THOUGHT did it nicely in front from the start, responding when called on and doing enough for a solid win (61.16; 35.22). He appeals as an ideal type for the Epsom Handicap and other good 1600-2000m races. In the third black type heat over 900m won by the G1 star Alligator Blood (54.82;34.95) CALL DI put in nice work late for a strong third.

WARWICK FARM July 24: More black type trials on the course proper. In Heat 1 over 900m tough gelding LOOKS LIKE ELVIS was revved up and made to sprint to the line over the last 300m for a strong win (54.06; 34.83).

ROSEHILL July 21: Three heats on the course proper for black type performers. In Heat 3 over 900m the former SA-trained 4YO EXTREMELY LUCKY put in excellent work over the last 200m to finish second in his first appearance for the Waller stable. OLENTIA also had nice pipe opener to her preparation.

WARWICK FARM July 7: The better heat winners in the 2YO trials included the well performed THE INSTRUCTOR taking out his 792m heat with authority (47.37; 34.04)
