ROSEHILL October 27

Inside Grass; Soft 5

14 Heats – 5 x 1030m (3 Open; 2 Maiden); 9 x 900m (2 2YO; 3 Open; 4 Maiden)

Crack sprinter PRIVATE EYE and a number of other noted Group performers took the spotlight in strong open company heats.

A classy 1030m heat was won in fine style by CANNONBALL, not surprisingly in easily the fastest time of the five heats over the distance (61.99). He was never off the bit to lead from the jump and was too sharp over the distance, running out a strong two lengths winner over the in-form CEPHEUS with the Queenslander YELLOW BRICK running home under a ride for third.

In the open heats over 900m the sharp speedster WAY TO THE STARS showed he was holding his form well with an impressive win in the fastest trial over the distance (53.66; 33.71). It was an excellent piece of work and he should take this form into any race up to 1200m.

His time shaded the 900m heat won by another good sprinter IOWNA MERC (53.80; 33.85). Having his first trial since July he was asked to work to the line to run down his fast stablemate MALKOVICH in a heat that featured the G1 stars OSIPENKO and PRIVATE EYE.

OSIPIENKO looked to have freshened up well since his trip to Melbourne for the Turnbull Stakes, having a quiet trial before putting in strong work over the last 100m to finish fourth. PRIVATE EYE was not in the heat to compete and was allowed to drop well off the pace at the rear before picking up a gear or two with soft work over the last 100m.

NEWCASTLE October 24

Beaumont Grass; Good 4

16 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 7 x 1000m (3 Open; 4 maiden); 8 x 800m (3 Open; 1 2YO; 4 Maiden)

ANGARA (Paul Perry): He's a Frankel 4YO with only one win in 11 starts but may be ready to hit his straps after his impressive return in his first trial since July. Took control of his 1000m heat a long way from home and ran right away from his rivals with Regan Bayliss swinging to him to score by more than six lengths. The clock backed it up as he posted easily the fastest of the seven heat wins over the distance (60.21; 33.65).

INTERVARSITY (Paul Messara/Leah Gavranich): Impressive first trial by this unraced Mikki Isle filly to win her 800m heat (48.63; 34.11) with authority. She showed no early pace but railed through from the 500m under a big hold from her rider Aaron Bullock and strode away under no pressure to score by almost five lengths. She's a natural runner with a smooth action and is sure to benefit from the experience.

POWER SPARK (Andrew MacDonald): Nice improvement from this unraced Super One gelding to win his second trial over 800m (48.20; 33.23). Could have gone quicker as he was keen to run but Rory Hutchings kept him under a tight hold from the jump. He easily extended his lead to four lengths turning for home before he was throttled down over the last 50 metres.

TANGLEWOOD (Todd Howlett): Smart 4YO has won two of his first five starts and there's more to come after he posted a soft win in his first trial since July. Travelled well within himself in his 800m heat and was ridden with no urgency to make up four lengths from the 400m and get the upper hand over the last 50 metres. It was the fastest of the 800m heats (47.27; 32.76) with the smart runner up ZOE SHARK also worth noting as they gapped their rivals over the last 200m with more than five lengths to the third horse.

WARWICK FARM October 23

15 Heats; Good 4

Inside Grass – 3 x 1200m (1 Open; 1 C1/Maiden; 1 C2/Maiden); 4 x 815m (2 2YO; 2 Open); 4 x 812m (2 Open; 2 C1/Maiden); 3 x 809m (2 Maiden; 1 4YO); Polytrack – 1 x 740m (Open)

The 9YO veteran CASCADIAN resumed with a super trial win that says he is set for another strong campaign despite his advancing years.

CASCADIAN (James Cummings): Godolphin are good with their ageing stars (Hartnell!) and they have this 9Y0 in great health for his coming campaign. He was classes above his rivals in his815m heat (48.64; 33.78), given time to find his legs before pulling wide and sailing past his rivals under the quietest of rides to win the trial with ease. Really liked the way he worked past the line in a strong prep for his imminent return.

NORTHUMBRIA (Richard Litt): Second trial for his new trainer since leaving the Godolphin yard and he looks ready to perform well fresh after a strong win in the fastest of the three heats over 809m (47.63; 33.42); Travelled easily in second place and was only asked to extend from the 100m, easily picking up the leader with authority.

SUMO STAR (Gary Portelli): Impressive win in the fastest of four heats over 812m (47.39; 33.04), settling off the pace while travelling easily three and four wide before surging past the leaders with strong work over the last 200m. Looks capable of rising through the classes.

Other noted heat winners included the classy pair KIMOCHI (fastest 1200m heat/71.85; 34.33) and DAJRAAN (815m/48.59; 33.50).

Written Tycoon colt IRON HAWK posted the quickest time in the two 2YO heats over 815m (48.16; 33.52), being ridden along from the 600m to chase the leader and responding well for a strong win. The Russian Revolution filly BRONCO REVOLUTION won her heat in slower time (48.97; 34.30) but made a better impression leading on the bit and extending easily to run home in faster sectionals.

RANDWICK October 20

A Grass; Good 4

10 Heats – 2 x 1200m (2 Open); 5 x 1045m (2 Open; 3 C1/Maiden); 3 x 742m (1 2YO; 2 Open)

Good trials from maiden performers should provide some nice winners.

MUMBAI MUSE (Michael Freedman): This Zoustar filly is still a maiden after five starts but it's only a formality for hger to pick up a race soon considering she has a Group 2 placing in the Furious Stakes on her record. Had a month to freshen since her last start in the G2 Tea Rose and looks ready for what lies ahead after cruising home in her 742m heat (43.49; 33.21), extending nicely from off the pace to run past the leader with strong work over the last 100m.

TO THE EXTREME (Ron Quinton): Unraced Extreme Choice has now won two of her three trials with this effort another positive sign that she has the talent to win races. Came from midfield under a soft ride to easily run past the leader for a strong win in her 742m heat (43.63; 33.32).

The Waterhouse/Bott stable provided the three placegetters in the 2YO heat over 742m in another show of the depth in their juvenile team. Liked the work of the winner CATOGGIO and runner-up MANUSCRIPT with the time (43.50; 33.14) adding merit as they ran home quicker than the two open heats.

The heats over 1045m featured a sharp win by the talented sprinter INSURRECTION, leading from start to finish for a strong win over CHRYSAOR (62.28; 34.27). The runner-up impressed with his late work and looks close to a win.

The fastest heat over 1045m was won by the 4YO gelding I'MINTOWIN, a maiden winner from six starts in New Zealand having his first Sydney trial for the Waterhouse/Bott stable. Worked along in the lead and held his ground to the line with a nice effort from MISS HELLFIRE taking the eye with her closing second.

Good performances in the C1/Maiden heats by MAMBO LEGEND, ROCKETEER GIRL, ZOUPHORIA and WATCH MY GIRL point to positive prospects when they go to the races.

11 Heats – 1 x 1250m (Open); 5 x 1000m (2 Open; 3 Maiden); 5 x 800m (1 Open; 1 2YO; 3 Maiden)

Some familiar names from the Godolphin and Snowden stables showing good form ahead of their summer campaigns.

CANNONBALL (Peter & Paul Snowden): Good sprinter was best of the open heat winners, showing his class to easily put away his rivals with a sharp win in the fastest trial over 800m (46.96; 32.34).

The well performed Godolphin stablemates BACCHANALIA and BRIGANTINE made a typical start to their campaigns with easy trials. They were placed in their 1000m heats with both working to the line with plenty in reserve.

You can also keep an eye on their maiden runners PARADE GROUND and TULLE as they look open to improvement on their good placings in their 1000m heats. The Blake Ryan-trained BIG BOUNCER is a maiden heat winner worth following.

The Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou 2YO stablemates GAI'S ARTIST and DIDDLE DUMPLING showed nice promise to fill the quinella in the juvenile heat over 800m (47.30; 32.71).
