Navy Black salutes on debut at Ballarat
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Navy Black (2 f ex Black Brada by Domesday) saluted on debut at Ballarat on Tuesday, providing his Coolmore Australia-based sire Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) with his sixth first crop winner.
Navy Black fought it out to defeat three-year-old filly Northwood Poppet (Written Tycoon) by a head, with fellow three-year-old Lushfields (Deep Field) the same distance back in third, in the Polytrack Maiden Plate (1200m).
"She was exposed at the top of the straight and had to tough it out," Calvin McEvoy said.
"She's a nice filly for the future and will only continue to improve."
Navy Black was bought for $85,000 by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock at last year's Magic Millions National yearling Sale from the draft of her breeder B2B Thoroughbreds.
Merchant Navy's 2022 fee is $27,500 (inc GST), down from $33,000 (inc GST) last year when the son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) covered 127 mares. Russian Revolution (Snitzel) heads the Australian leading sires table for both earnings and winners while Merchant Navy now sits in fifth place in the table by winners.
