The Australian yearling sale correction arrived in South Australia this week, but Magic Millions was still 'really pleased' with the 2023 Adelaide Yearling Sale.

Barry Bowditch pointed out that had last year's sale not occurred the 2023 would be trumpeted as the greatest Adelaide Yearling Sale ever, so while the numbers were down on last year it is no time to be pressing the panic button.

Across Tuesday and Wednesday, 341 yearlings were sold for a total of $16,894,000 at an average of $49,543 with an 82 percent clearance rate. The median was $40,000.

Last year's sale grossed $20,921,500 at an average of $58,439 with a $45,000 median, but in 2021 the gross was $15,139,000 with a $47,797 average.

"Take last year's sale out of the equation, which was an unbelievable sale and up some $5 million on the year before, this is as good a sale as we've had in Adelaide," Bowditch said.

"I am really pleased that the buyers accepted the catalogue like we saw it.

"The South Australians who leave their best horses here in the state have been very well rewarded and it's fantastic to see."

The second day's top lot was a Written By colt out of a half-sister to the dam of Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare who sold to John Foote for $220,000.

That was the same amount Hong Kong agent George Moore paid for a Capitalist colt on Day 1, which was $10,000 less than the sale's top lot; a colt by Harry Angel who also sold on Day 1.

The top lot was also bought by Moore, in partnership with Lloyd Kennewell, and Bowditch said a pleasing aspect of the sale was the spread of the buying bench.

"I think the participation from a lot of buyers from Asia, Western Australia has been great and most areas we marketed the sale to have come and supported the sale," he said.

"It's always a great trade market sale and I think you'll see plenty of these horses at our 2YOs in Training Sale later in the year."
