The downturn in the market at yearling sales leading up to this year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale was nowhere to be seen when the prestigious offering commenced at Warwick Farm on Monday.

A total of $65,520,000 worth of horseflesh changed hands on a day that compared favourably with the opening day at the hugely successful 2022 sale.

The Day 1 gross was down a tick over $4 million on Day 1 last year, but the 2022 Day 1 gross was compiled by 191 yearlings sold, at a rate of 90 percent, whereas Day 1 this year saw 160 horses sold (at 77 percent).

That meant the 2023 average of $409,500 was up significantly on last year's $365,864, while this year's median was $300,000 compared with $280,000 a year ago.

The top end of the market this year was significantly stronger than last year with Monday producing 14 seven-figure lots, compared with six in 2022.

Below is a look at some of the star performers on Day 1.

$1,750,000 – Lot 117 (Pierro x Ennis Hill filly): Half-sister to Learning To Fly from the family of Lake Geneva and Acrobat who was bought by Michael Wallace and Ghandarvi Racing and now holds th distinction of being Pierro's highest-priced yearling.
