The record-breaking Frankel filly stole the show, but three other weanlings sold for well beyond $200,000 in what Inglis considered a 'spirited' start to the Great Southern Sale.

More than $5.8m was traded on a day that averaged $41,436, which was only slightly down on last year's Day 1 average of $43,200.

Burnewang North's Frankel-Vedema filly who sold to James Mitchell for $825,000 dwarfed the day's other top lots, but that's to be expected when she bettered the highest-price ever paid for an Inglis weanling by $200,000.

The second highest-priced lot of the day was Grenville Stud's Zoustar-Donelle filly, who sold to Blackridge Farm for $280,000.

Burnewang North also had the third and fourth most expensive lots of the day, a Written Tycoon filly who sold for $250,000 the lot after Grenville Stud's prized member, while less than half-an-hour into the sale a son of Kingman sold for $240,000.

"We'd predicted ahead of the sale that the demand at the top of the market would be extremely strong and I think it's fair to say that's how the day played out,'' Inglis's Victorian manager James Price said.

"The $825,000 for Burnewang North with their Frankel filly was astounding, I don't think anybody realistically saw that price coming and it's a further example that if you bring quality to the Great Southern Sale, you will be rewarded handsomely.

"There was plenty of spirited bidding throughout the day and there was a great variety of buyers participating, both at Oaklands and online. The clearance rate improved progressively through the day and will continue to do so as we work with vendors and buyers to get more weanlings sold.

"There are many more quality opportunities tomorrow, firstly with the remaining weanlings and then the broodmares. It's the final day of the Southern Hemisphere sales season on the eastern seaboard for live auctions, there's no tomorrow after this, now is the time to get involved.''

The Great Southern Sale continues from 10am Friday with another 133 weanlings catalogued before moving on to the 47-lot broodmare offering.
