Griff etched his name into the record books as not only a Caulfield Guineas winner, but the first Group 1 winner for his sire Trapeze Artist after a breakout win at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained colt is a member of the first crop of Trapeze Artist, a Bert Viera-raced son of Snitzel who counts a Golden Rose and T J Smith Stakes among four Group 1 wins and stands at Widden's New South Wales base.

It was also a first Group 1 victory for Widden's Victorian operation, who offered Griff for sale at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, where he fetched $80,000.

"It's such a big result for Widden Victoria, to breed and sell a Group 1 winner through what was our first draft at the Premier Sale since expanding into Victoria," Widden principal Antony Thompson said.

"It's a real testament to what we're doing in Victoria and a really proud moment for all of us.

"It was such a good, strong win. It's also fantastic for Trapeze Artist to really cement his place as such a star stallion of the future.

"We've always held him in enormous regard and we're not at all surprised but it's just lovely for him to do it early in the spring and it's huge for Bert."

Griff, who won the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes at The Valley the start before his Guineas win, is the second to race out of Chateau Griffo – a daughter of Sebring, who stood at Widden – behind Capitalist gelding, who has won three of 18 starts.
