Kosgei was promoted as the headline lot of Inglis's final digital sale of 2023 and the three-year-old gelding is already living up to that billing.

The last-start Victoria Derby fourth placegetter will almost certainly be the highest-priced male galloper sold on the platform this year and it is not completely out of the question that he becomes the most expensive ever.

The son of The Autumn Sun was at $400,000 at 12.25pm on Tuesday, which was exactly 24 hours before final bids were due to be taken.

The most expensive Inglis Digital horse this year is Ringmaster, a son of Zoustar who sold for $435,000 in January, while the dearest ever was Fastnet Rock gelding Ranch Hand, who sold for $600,000 in June 2022.

Kosgei is out of Sara Anna, a daughter of Stravinsky who is the dam of ATC Australian Derby winner Tavago, and was put on the market with the intention of catching the eye of Hong Kong buyers.

Kosgei did not have his first start until August 31, when he won a 1400m Bendigo maiden, and while winless in four starts since he was runner-up over 1600m at Sandown at his second start and also owns a Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) third placing along with his Derby effort.

He clearly holds top billing in an Inglis Digital sale that also includes the Chris Waller-trained Frumos ($110,000 at 12.25pm Tuesday) and a two percent share in dual Group 1 winner and stallion-in-waiting Mo'Unga ($100,000).
