A colt by one of the leading contenders for this year Champion First-Season Sire award topped the Inglis Gold Yearling Sale, which was held in Melbourne on Sunday.

The son of Tassort and the Denman mare Viascon, who hails from the family of Streama, sold to Trilogy Racing for $80,000.

The colt was offered on behalf of Max Porlezza's Braebrook Thoroughbreds, which was thrilled with the result.

"We thought he was a nice colt and I've always thought you want to have the nicer colts in those kind of sales where he was going to stand out and while you never know how much they're going to stand out," Porlezza said.

"It was just a great result, more than we ever expected.''

Tassort is the sire of this year's ATC Sires' winner Manaal and Trilogy Racing's Sean Dingwall said the sale-topper looks an early runner.

"He'll go to the breakers basically immediately and get into the system and hopefully be up and running early,'' Dingwall said.

"The stallion is really doing the job, they lucked on the right leg with Manaal winning the Sires' a fortnight ago and having a fee increase to be announced this week, it just made sense.''

The Tassort colt edged out colt by Dirty Work for top honours with the Collingrove Stud youngster selling to Darryl Carrison for $75,000.

A colt by Alabama Express from the family of Thousand Guineas winner All Time High was the next highest-priced lot of the sale, selling for $70,000.

The sale grossed $1,216,250, which was significantly down on last year's gross of $1,952,550, when there was a $200,000 top lot, but this year's average of $19,617 and median of $14,500 were well up on last year's figures of $14,681 and $8000.
