Rarely does a day of stakes of racing in New Zealand conclude without Waikato Stud-based stallion Savabeel (Zabeel) being represented by a new stakes winner and Friday was no different with his five-year-old daughter Savy Yong Blonk (5 m ex Ampin by Pins) adding a 109th stakes win to the stallion's CV in the City of Auckland Cup (Gr 3, 2400m).

The Jamie Richards-trained five-year-old mare came into the race having finished second in both the Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) and Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and she finally got her head in front when coming out on top of a close finish with Platinum Invador (Redwood), beating by a nose. Robusto (Zed) was another length and a quarter back in third.

"She really deserves this win," Richards said. "She's run second in a number of these big Cup races. She's not the biggest mare, but fair play to her – she's done the job."

Bred and raced by Gartshore Bloodstock Ltd, Savy Yong Blonk is out of unraced Pins (O'Reilly) mare Ampin, making her a sister to Group 2 winner Adelaide Ace.

Ampin herself is a half-sister to Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Strike The Stars, while further afield this is the same family as Group 3 scorer Another Dollar (Ocean Park).

Being by Savabeel and out of the a Pins mare, Savy Yong Blonk is therefore bred on the same cross as 14 other stakes winners, headed by Group 1-winning trio Savvy Coup, Brambles and Probabeel.

After missing to Coolmore Stud shuttler Churchill (Galileo) in 2019, Ampin was most recently covered by Darley's stalwart Lonhro (Octagonal).

Five-time champion sire Savabeel - who stood at Waikato Stud for NZ$100,000 (plus GST) this year - has 44 lots catalogued for Karaka 2021 - Book 1. He currently sits at the head of the New Zealand sires table with his progeny earnings totalling NZ$1,136,240, almost NZ$400,000 clear of nearest rival Darci Brahma (Danehill) whilst he also heads the table by winners.

Skycity City Of Auckland Cup (G3)

WT: 53.0kg Type: OPEN

This G3 Open Handicap over 2400m was solidly run and won by the second favourite Savy Yong Blonk by a nose in 2:26.25. Today the 5yo mare was winning her sixth race in twenty-one outings and it was her first Blacktype win. The winners and where they came from were eighth (five-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), fourth (trailed inner and length and a half from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), led (one-off the inside and led by two lengths), second (two-off the inside and eighth lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), led (neck in front and one-off), ninth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader) and third (two-off the inside and length and a half from the leader). Savy Yong Blonk ran third in this race a year ago at 55kg but today was carrying 1kg less extraordinarily considering the form she was in and just beat Platinum Invador today, which won this last year. Her form coming into today was two close seconds at G3 so she was very well weighted. She raced back as usual and was eleventh the outer then tenth across the top before unleashing the run home to be third at the 200m and then leading at the 50m. The runner up Platinum Invador ran home hard from last early and under 56.5kg, so his 2kg more than the winner proved a key factor at the line. He was only second up too so has more improvement to come and does thrive at this time of the year. Robusto ran on well for third from middle the inner and was beaten less than a length and a half plus carried just 54kg. Fourth home was a certainty beaten namely In A Twinkling that carried 57.5kg and had a horror run wide for more than a mile and only got one-off outside the leader across the top. He led turning for home and was only run over the final 50m and to be beaten a smidgen more than a length and a half. The Australian bred gelding was in form having run third at G1 prior to today at WFA and before that winning at G3 carrying 57.5kg. Fifth home was Justamaiz that settled well back the improved wide with cover midrace and got up to third across the top. He reached second at the 200m before being swamped late and was beaten just over two lengths. Sixth home and running on was Te Akau Caliburn, the Irish bred gelding that came from tenth on the fence and ran on okay to be beaten just over two and a half lengths. Sherrif was next home beaten less than two and three quarter lengths after racing handy the inner and he fought well the run home. Seventh home and beaten almost four and three-quarter lengths was the Australian bred Swords Drawn that ran on from well back the inner on settling. Next home was Yatima that settled well back then swept up wider across the top and she reached fourth turning for home before weakening. The rest got beaten almost ten lengths and as much as sixteen lengths. This rear six contained some disappointment too such as Dragon Storm that had won the G3 NZ Cup (3200m) at his last start and also Charles Road, which ran a shocker today to finish last under the topweight of 58kg. This was a true run race and contained most of the usual Cups suspects at this time of the year. The first two home will feature in any Cup they contest this season while the fourth finisher In A Twinkling was a good thing beaten after doing a power of wide work in the running. This was a serious enough G2 field and run in a manner where there stamina was tested thorougly.
