Mapperley Stud-based sire Contributor (High Chaparral) was represented by his first stakes winner when his Stephen Nickalls-trained daughter Llanacord (3 f ex L’accord by Golan) scored a narrow victory in the Lowlands Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Hastings on Wednesday.

Having her third start in stakes company, Llanacord withstood the late challenge of Charms Star (Per Incanto) to hold on by a nose. Canuhandleajandal (Jimmy Choux) was another half length back in third.

Ridden by Leah Hemi, Llanacord enjoyed a nice run three back on the fence before being presented at the top of the straight and proved too tough in the run home, setting up a tilt at the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Trentham on March 20.

“It feels amazing. It’s just an incredible feeling,” Nickalls, best-known for training jumpers, said after claiming his first flat stakes success.

“We ran second in a Wellington Steeplechase and that was a special day, but this is pretty cool.

“I know we are in COVID times and it is a very different world, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm at all.

“I have got to say a big thank you to Darryl Bradley who galloped her on Monday for me and said ‘this filly has just improved out of sight’.

“We were happy with her and she was fit and healthy. If she was good enough, she was in the right condition, and she certainly proved she was good enough.”

Llanacord was sold for NZ$15,000 by Mapperley Stud to part-owner Mr K E Hopson at the New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2019 Karaka Book 2 sale. She has now won twice and placed in another two of her eight career starts for earnings of just over NZ$63,000. She is one of four winners and the only stakes winner out of winning Golan (Spectrum) mare L’Accord who was bought by Mapperley Stud for NZ$26,000 at the 2011 New Zealand Bloodstock National Broodmare Sale.

Llanacord’s second dam is Distant Heights (Imposing) who produced New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Ad Altar (Kenfair).

After producing a colt by LA Stud shuttler Time Test last November, L’accord was covered again by Contributer.

Contributer has sired 14 winners in his first two crops to race and four stakes performers including Lion’s Roar who finished second in the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). He stands at Mapperley Stud where his 2020 stud fee was NZ$10,000 +GST.

The winner of this G2 3yo fillies only over 2100m in a very tight finish was Llanacord, a last start maiden winner by daylight that scored by a nose today. She clocked 2:10.25 and that was only the second best time of three races held over the journey today with the opening event, a Ratings74, clocking 2:09.71. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fourth (one-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), led (on the inner and half a length in front), second (two-off the inside and a neck from the leader), third (on the fence and two lengths from the leader), led (on the inner and a neck in front), third (third on the inner and length and a half from the leader), third (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and three lengths clear). Llanacord raced seventh the outer until sweeping up near the home turn and she turned in third and four-wide before surging into second at the 250m then led with 150m to go. She had established a winning break but needed every inch of it as she hung on at the line in a tight finish by a nose from a good thing beaten in Charms Star. The first four home were covered by less than three-quarters of a length and the first six home were covered by just over a length and a half. Today was the second win by Llanacord having won prior to this her maiden by over eight lengths and both these runs have come at 2000m and 2100m notably. It was the third time she had tried Stakes level after a sixth at G3 and a seventh at Listed level. Second home and she should have won was Charms Star that really boomed home from third last the outer on settling and she was tenth and wide turning for home and still seventh at the 200m. She got held up early the run home before getting wider and into clear air and made up many lengths the final 200m. Third home was Canuhandleajandal that raced fourth then fifth the inner then worked off on the home turn and reached third at the 250m. She regained third on the post after being fourth with 20m to go and was ridden by an apprentice. This filly had run well for fourth equal at G2 and sixth at G2 earlier in her career so was well up to this grade. Fourth home and losing third on the line was the second favourite Zee Falls that worked a bit to the lead and then once headed at the 150m looked sure to place. She had runs run second prior to a Derby favoured filly in Tokorangi so was in form. Interestingly the second to fourth finishers today all drew badly in this event. Fifth home was Passione that raced eleventh the inner then worked off between runners midrace before turning for home seventh. She ran on gamely to be beaten just over a length. Sixth home and moral beaten out of a place at least was the favourite Cheaperthandivorce that raced second last the inner mostly and was still miles back turning for home. She was ninth at the 200m and seventh at the 100m but steamed home and looks an Oaks player for sure. In her three runs before this she has met Amarelinha (the odds on pop for the Oaks), Milford (a top tier Derby Chance) and Tokorangi (a top tier Derby chance). Prior to this she has won easily on debut so is a filly with real scope. A gap of over three and a half lengths then came to the seventh finisher in Town Cryer ($34) that was a last start maiden winner and today raced handy the outer before wilting. Eighth home was Swing The Tide at $60 and the maiden filly raced tenth the inner and was sixth turning for home the fence before wilting. Ninth home and bitterly disappointing was the Australian bred Providenceprovides that trailed on the inner and worked off second turning in then stopped. The rest got beaten five lengths and up to over sixteen lengths with Lily's Lady the disappointment in finishing twelfth and beaten over six and a half lengths. The winner did a good job to score but the second filly should have won for sure and the sixth finisher at least should have paid a dividend and may well have beaten them all if not ridden so cold. The first six home have an Oaks nomination for March 21 and all of them will pose some sort of threat but have the odds on Amarelinha to beat.
