The last yearling by Darley's late sire Shamardal (Giant's Causeway) topped the opening session of the Arqana August Yearling Sale in Deauville on Saturday when bought for €1.6 million by Godolphin.

Sold by Gestut Ammerland as Lot 21, the colt is the second foal out of the Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed Frankel (Galileo) mare Lady Frankel. The colt's second dam is Lady Vettori (Vettori), the dam of nine winners headed by Group 1 winning stallion Lope De Vega (Shamardal).

"He's a lovely colt that walks well. He is by Shamardal, a fantastic stallion that we have had a lot of success with," said purchase Anthony Stroud.

"He comes from a great family and a stud that doesn't need to prove itself. We're very happy."

Offered early in the sale as Lot 5,  the filly is out of Just With You (Sunday Break) who has produced three winners to date including the Group 3 winning filly Penja (Camelot) and Listed winner Taos (Toronado).

The filly was sold by Haras de Castillon and after the sale the farm's Benoit Jeffroy said: "We're very pleased and she's a lovely filly. She's been popular all week and she's from a family we've had for a long time. We hope she's very good for her future connections and hopefully we'll see her on the racetrack at a high level."

Wootton Bassett will stand his second season at Coolmore Australia this year and his fee is advertised at $71,500 (inc GST).

Overall on Saturday 112 of the 133 lots sold, producing a clearance rate of 84 per cent. With the sale being conduced in a new format this year, direct comparisons are not possible with last year's opening session, however, the average of €177,339 was up from €163,574 last year while the median rose from €100,000 to €120,000.
