Day one of the 2022 Goffs Orby Sale was topped by a filly by No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) who was sold by as Glenvale Stud to Richard Knight for €2.6 million.

Offered as Lot 93, the filly it out of winning mare Muirin (Born To Sea) who is the dam of this year's Group 1 winning juvenile Blackbeard (No Nay Never). Knight secured the filly after a protracted bidding duel with Goffs US agent Jacob West.

"I thought she was the absolute standout of the sale even without her brother on the page," said Knight.

"Just as an individual she had everything; she's a lovely size, a lovely shape and a very athletic filly. Every time I went and saw her she did exactly what I wanted. Then you can add the brother and the sire into the mix too. I'm just delighted to get her."

Blackbeard was bought by Jamie McCalmont for 270,000gns at the 2020 Tattersalls December Foal Sale when offered by Norelands Stud. His sister was sold by Flash Conroy's Glenvale Stud who was delighted with the sale.

"We're delighted," Conroy said. "You never expect that kind of return on any animal. She was a beautiful animal but you never expect them to sell that well. We were a lot more conservative than obviously what she made, though, an animal like that can exceed exceptions."

When asked about Blackbeard he said: "He's a wonderful horse. He's improved with every run and Aidan has done a wonderful job with him.

"She's quite similar. Similar physique, very strong, very good limbs and a good mover. They'd been quite comparable."

Newtown Anner Stud secured the second highest priced yearling of the day when going to €750,000 for a daughter of the late multiple champion sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells). The filly is the first foal out of dual Group 2 winner Signora Cabello (Camacho) and was sold by The Castlebridge Consignment as Lot 215.

Another lot to sell well was the Mountarmstrong Stud consigned Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) willy who made €525,000 when bought by BBA Ireland. Sold as Lot 164, the filly is out of Listed winner Rapacity Alexander (Dandy Man), dam of group 1 winner No Speak Alexander (Shalaa).

"She was a very nice filly and she was very well received," said vendor Noel O'Callaghan of Mountarmstrong Stud. "She had a lot of vets and hopefully she'll be very lucky for the new owners. I think she'll be going to Jessie (Harrington) to be trained which is also a bonus."

Turnover on day one finished at €26,888,000, up 37 per cent from 2021. The average rose by 25 per cent to €129,269, while median was up by 33 per cent to €100,000, compared to last year. The clearance rate finished at 88 per cent.
