The first day of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in Deauville on Saturday saw 188 of the 239 lots offered sell for €45,880,400. This figure surpassed the turnover of last year's sale, which was held over four days.

On Saturday the average was €244,045, up 17 per cent from €210,477 last year while the median climbed from €87,000 to €115,000. This year 23 lots sold for €500,000 or more, compared to 13 last year while seven sold for €1 million or more, two more than in 2021.

Following the first day, Eric Hoyeau, President of Arqana and Freddy Powell, Executive Director, said, "We would like to sincerely thank all our vendors for entrusting us with a collection of exceptional mares, fillies and foals which allowed us to gather a remarkable panel of buyers from the United States, Australia, Europe, Japan etc.

"We would also like to thank all our buyers for this record breaking session and wish them every success."

Malavath sells for €3.2 million to Moyglare
Moyglare Stud went to €3.2 million to secure Group 2 winning and Grade 1 place three-year-old Malavath (Mehmas). Sold as a filly in training, the daughter of Mehmas was bought as a two-year-old by David Redvers and Meridian at last year's Arqana Deauville Breeze Up Sale, which was held in Doncaster, for €139,200.

She has raced 11 times for three wins and four placings which include last year's Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte (1200m) and she ran second in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (8f) at Del Mar last November.

Her last start came on November 5 when she was fifth behind Modern Games (Dubawi) in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile (8f) at Keeneland.

The filly, who was previously trained in France by Francis Graffard will now join Christophe Clement in the US.

"She's a beautiful filly, and physically she has everything to be a good broodmare. She should bring speed, which we are looking for. She likes the US and has everything to win a Grade 1 over there. That's the aim," said Fiona Craig of Moyglare.

The filly is out of New Approach (Galileo) mare Fidaaha, making her a brother to this year's Group 3 winning juvenile Knight. Fidaaha meanwhile is a sister to Group 3 winner Ceisteach and a half-sister to fellow Group winner Steip Amach (Vocalised).

Malavath was one of two lots bought by Moyglare Stud on Saturday, with dual Group 2 winning four-year-old Amazing Grace (Protectionist) purchased for €850,000.
