Royal Ascot Pedigrees - Day One

3 minute read

Bernstein’s daughter Tepin elevated her status as the leading turf mare in the northern hemisphere with her fifth G1 win in the Queen Anne Stakes on Royal Ascot’s opening program on Tuesday.

The American five-year-old, trained by Mark Casse, is the first Royal Ascot winner by Bernstein, sire of other G1 performers Karakontie, Goshawk Ken and Dream Express.

Tepin is the fourth foal produced from the unraced Stravinsky mare Life Happened, also the dam of G3-placed Prime Cut and G2 winner Vyjack.

Life Happened is a half-sister to the G3 winner Disco Rico from the G2 winner Miss Slewpy.

Tepin was a $US140,000 purchase from the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale in 2012.

COVENTRY STAKES: More US breeding came to the fore when the imposing colt Caravaggio provided his late Coolmore sire Scat Daddy with his third two-year-old winner at Royal Ascot.

Scat Daddy, who stood at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky, is also the sire of Acapulco, winer of last year’s Queen Mary Stakes, and No Nay Never, who won the G2 Norfolk Stakes in 2013.

Other notable performers by the son of Johannesburg include dual G2 winner Daddy Long Legs, G1 winner Celestine and multiple Graded winner El Kabeir.

Caravaggio is the sixth foal out of the winning Holy Bull mare Mekko Hokte and is a half-brother to G2 scorer My Jen. He is closely related to Us dirt winners Ninja Blade and Africanist.

KING’S STAND STAKES: The winner Profitable provided his accomplished Irish sire Invincible Spirit with a new elite level winner.

Profitable, who had won G3 and G2 races at his previous starts, became Invincible Spirit's 13th individual G1 winner.

A son of Green Desert, Invincible Spirit stands for €120,000 at the Irish National Stud and has sired 96 stakes winners.

His leading progeny include champion 3YO miler Kingman, boom Australian sire I Am Invincible (sire of champion sprinter Brazen Beau), his highest earning son Charm Spirit, a triple G1 winner who shuttles to Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand, Moonlight Cloud and Mayson.

Profitable is the seventh foal produced by the winning Indian Ridge mare Dani Ridge, dam of six other winners including his full brothers Invincible Ridge and Ridge Wood Dani, Listed winner Ridge Ranger and G3-placed Full Mandate and Danidh Dubai.

He was purchased by his trainer Clive Cox for 95,000 guineas from Book 1 of the 2013 Tattersalls October Sale.

Profitable was purchased prior to the King’s Stand Stakes by Darley as a stallion prospect.

ST JAMES’S PALACE STAKES: The 2000 Guineas Galileo Gold returned to his best with an impressive victory and continue a remarkable season for his sire Paco Boy, who stands at Highclere Stud.

A former G1 star by Desert Style, Paco Boy other notable performers include Imperial Aviator and Maljaa.

Galileo Gold, his fist G1 winer when he won the 2000 Guineas, is the first foal out of the Galileo mare Galicuix, a half-sister to last year's G1 King's Stand Stakes winner Goldream.

Further back in his pedigree is the late champion stayer and sire Montjeu and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Again.

He was purchased by Amanda Skiffington for €33,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale in 2014.

The Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale continues to go from strength to strength having produced three European classic winners this year.

WINDSOR CASTLE STAKES: The winner Ardad was bred by Tally-Ho Stud from its flagship stallion Kodiac, the source of 23 stakes winners including Besharah, Kodi Bear and Tiggy Wiggy.

He is out of Good Clodora, a daughter of former Tally-Ho Stud sire Red Clubs who was bred by the farm's Roger and Henry O'Callaghan and sold as a yearling for €48,000 before the stud bought the mare back at the end of her racing career for just 7000 guineas.

Good Clodora is a half-sister to Listed winners Alexander Alliance, Inzar's Best and Ruby Rocket, the latter the dam of G1 winner Maarek.

Tally-Ho Stud sold Ardad for a joint sale-topping £170,000 at the Goffs UK Breeze-up Sale in April where he was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock for Abdullah Saeed Al Naboodah.
