2015 Kyneton Cup Preview

3 minute read

A day after claiming the Melbourne Cup, trainer Darren Weir boasts a three-pronged attack in Wednesday’s $100,000 Kyneton Cup.

While a Kyneton Cup isn’t nearly as exciting as the Melbourne Cup Darren Weir claimed yesterday with Prince Of Penzance, a Victorian Country Cup rarely goes by without Weir boasting a strong team.

Wednesday’s Kyneton Cup is no different with Weir saddling up three runners.

Our Voodoo Prince is in superb form and shapes as the one to beat.

The gelding was transferred to Darren Weir from Chris Waller at the start of spring and the change has seemingly sparked the son of Kingmambo back to life.

In five starts for Weir, Our Voodoo Prince has recorded wins at Caulfield and Moonee Valley.

Our Voodoo Prince heads to Kyneton after that last start win at Moonee Valley where he beat a couple of rivals here in Akzar and Lord Durante.

12 days later he strikes a most suitable race where three of his eight rivals sit well outside of the handicap.

Of the remaining five, he beat two quite comfortably at Moonee Valley last start.

2014 Kyneton Cup winner Tristram’s Sun shapes as the main danger as the gelding bids to defend his title.

The Yamanin Vital gelding has performed well so far this campaign and last start was prominent throughout when a close fifth in the Sale Cup.

The Robbie Laing-trained seven-year-old should be timed to the minute in this contest and shapes as an excellent each way chance.

Topweight Wish Come True was beaten a long way on resuming in the Seymour Cup.

That being said, it was a solid enough run and he will take benefit from the outing.

Akzar has been just fair this campaign.

The Melbourne Cup winning combination of Darren Weir and Michelle Payne again partner up 24 hours later on the son of Selkirk.

Weir has put the Blinkers on Akzar for the first time this campaign and they don’t need to spark much improvement for the eight-year-old to be playing a role in the finish.

Lord Durante stuck on fairly behind Our Voodoo Prince last start.

He looks the best of the double figure hopes.

The 2015 Kyneton Cup features a number of winning chances however on his latest consistency, Our Voodoo Prince gets the nod in Wednesday’s feature event.

XXXX Gold Kyneton Cup

WT: 54kg Type: OPEN

Tristram’s Sun won the Kyneton Cup for a second successive year. He went forward from his outside barrier (9) and settled in fourth place, one out and one back. He moved up nicely (three wide) approaching the home turn, took the lead on passing the 100m and fought back to score a good win. Tilla Bell Rings settled well in second last place in the nine-horse field, following a moderate pace. He switched deep nearing the home turn and came with a good late run for second. Our Voodoo Prince tracked the eventual winner (racing in sixth place in the mid-stages), followed him (wide) into the home straight and kept battling on quite well for a sound third. Akzar raced behind the leader (Lord Durante) before Michelle Payne steered him along the rails on straightening and he looked the winner when he took a narrow lead at the 200m. But he battled a bit from that point under his 58kg to finish a close-up fourth
