Tenniele giving Charles a good vibe

3 minute read

Trainer Kody Charles will be hoping to continue Western Australia’s good recent run in the National Sprint Championship (525m) at The Meadows on Saturday night.

Saige Tenniele booked her trip to Victoria by taking out the WA Sprint Championship at Cannington earlier this month.

The daughter of Bernardo will be out to join West On Augie (2018) and Premium Share (2019) as recent winners of the coveted National Sprint Championship and bring the total number of WA-trained winners of the race to eight.

Saige Tenniele drew barrier two in yesterday's box draw and Kody Charles said he was pleased with that.

"I was pressing refresh all morning," Charles told TABradio.

"We've been praying for an inside draw to give her the best possible chance.

"When we came out second and we drew the two, that was the perfect draw for her."

A winner at eight of her 28 starts, Saige Tenniele will be looking to record her and Charles' biggest success in greyhound racing on Saturday night.

Charles' previous training highlight came when Cobargo won the 2020 Group 2 WA Oaks.

Postman Pat is a commanding $1.60 TABtouch favourite for the feature event, with Saige Tenniele on the fifth line of betting at $8.50.

Saige Tenniele had a solo exhibition trial at The Meadows on Saturday night and Charles said it was the perfect hit out ahead of this weekend.

"I was really happy," he said.

"It was all new to her, but in my head I really hoped, to be a realisitic chance, to run or break 30 seconds.

"She came out and went 29.87.

"She roared home in 12.05 which is a pretty good run.

"I'm sure she will benefit from seeing that track.

"She definitely goes into the race with a live chance now."

Charles will be hoping to head into Saturday's chasing feature off the back of some success in a different code.

The 36-year-old owns the Ryan Bell-trained Heez A Vibe, who will line up in the $100,000 Pearl Classic (2130m) at Gloucester Park.

The gelding drew barrier 11 for the Group 2 event, as he looks to record the biggest win of his career.

"Ryan's done a super job with him," he said.

"That will be exciting, so we will be cheering him home."
