First up us success for Maddy Young

3 minute read

Maddy Young managed to escape from WA relatively quietly but her debut drive in the USA was anything but that, with the girl from Pinjarra showing them how it’s done with a win first up at Freehold Raceway earlier in the week.

"First win was a great thrill; I was a little nervous leading up to it but once I got on the track I was fine, and things went our way."

Young head to the US last year for a working holiday in the Summer (July 2023) and fell in love, and although her time there was only short, she made the decision to head back with no permanent end in sight.

"I will come back (to America) and just see how long I can do; I do miss home a lot."

Young will have to head back to Australia in April to renew her visa but has every intention of heading straight back to the USA.

"I enjoyed my time in the US in the summer and wanted to come back and see what the winter was like and do a bit more time over here,

"I'll be working for Linda Toscano, there is 64 in work,

"I'm working with a lot of babies but there are some very nice older horses in the barn that I get to work with as well."

Young made mention that it's a big change to what she's used to here in WA, with even the simplest of tasks like driving a car a big adjustment with Americans driving on the right side of the road opposed to Australians who drive on the left.

"Everything is run on a schedule here, and people have a certain job,

"You're either jogging/training horses or you're gearing up and un-gearing."

She hasn't ruled out the possibility of eventually training one of her own over there either.

"I might get one horse to play around with,

"I came over just to see something different and really enjoy my time here,

"Lots to do, its action packed."
