Aversa continued to show plenty of promise last Friday at Marseille-Vivaux when getting off the mark at the third attempt in eye-catching style producing a four-length victory. The field broke well at the start and Aversa used her inside stall to good effect contesting the early lead. Ioritz Mendizabal positioned the filly in second after an unsuccessful attempt of getting to the front, settling against the running rail, a half-length behind the pace setter Eagle Sea. However, the tempo only looked average at halfway passing the stands with a circuit to go and the Jérôme Andreu trained winner found herself now in fourth, two lengths off the leader. As the runners passed their starting point, the nine participants continued to travel well with only eight lengths covering the group. To Ten Meters was the first to briefly come off the bridle down the back straight for the second and final time and was soon outpaced. There was a sudden increase of speed as they approached the final left-handed turn with the eventual winner sharing third place, two lengths off the leading duo. The daughter of Zelzal looked to be travelling strongly entering the home straight, catching the eye with the filly just needing some good fortune to begin her winning run. Luckily in the final 300m, the gap appeared at a perfect time and the two-year-old pressed on passing the leading pair and showing speed towards the finish line stretching clear in convincing style to be a four-length winner, looking impressive ahead of Eagle Sea and Zavadream who filled the frame. Jockey Ioritz Mendizabal never used the whip, and the filly demonstrated a nice attitude winning well. Aversa produced a fair debut effort at Marseille-Borely in early September when third among Class Two company over 1700m, staying on late that day. She tackled the same course and distance and same grade filling the same position second up in her career four weeks later, maintaining her promising profile. This victory third up over a longer journey is interesting and Aversa could be one to gain Black Type status later in her career. |
