Multivictory overcame a wide gate and belied big odds to triumph in the Class 1 Chevalier Cup at Sha Tin on November 29.

Jockey Alvin Ng executed an adroit ride on the Tony Cruz trainee, breaking from gate 13 of 14 in the 1600m contest and utilizing Multivictory’s early pace to sit outside the front-running Precision King. Ng unleashed his mount with a quarter-mile to race and the six-year-old quickly put a length and a half on the field.

Pressed on both flanks through the closing stages, Multivictory held on by a neck from Apollo’s Choice (114lb) with Dashing Fellow (124lb) a half-length away in third.

It was the Bachelor Duke gelding’s first win at the distance. The winning time was 1m 33.84s.

“This horse hasn’t raced since early October, but he had a barrier trial and he was quite good in that,” said Cruz of the now seven-time winner, successful at odds of 78/1.

“I’d planned to run him in a 1400-metre race but he couldn’t get into that so we shifted focus to the Chevalier Cup and it’s worked out great.”

Jockey Ng transferred to the Cruz stable last year following a couple of lean campaigns. This was his third win of the term.

Cruz, who was notching a sixth win from his last 26 runners, added: “The horse got a good lead today, the pace was right and he was able to sit in behind. I told Alvin to wait until the straight and he rode a perfect race, so I’m very happy for him.”

Jockeys Zac Purton and Karis Teetan were both in “multivictory” form.

Purton took races four, six and ten on Fabulous One, General Of Patch and Celestial Smile, while Teetan was on the mark with Eastern Express (Race 3) and Brilliant Dream (Race 7).

Trainer Chris So landed a treble with Aztec Empire (Race 1), Fabulous One and Classic Emperor (Race 9).
