Rogerson two-year-old juggernaut rolls on at Ellerslie

3 minute read

After proving nigh on unbeatable with their team of high quality juveniles in the early two-year-old races this season, the Graeme and Debbie Rogerson stable showed that they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with.

This was as the season winds down if the performance of Thwayya at Ellerslie on the weekend is anything to go by.

Unsighted since finishing fifth to Windborne in the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes at Avondale in November after a debut Otaki victory, Thwayya returned to the winners circle with a vengeance as she downed another promising filly in Untamed Diamond in a slogging finish to Saturday’s contest.

“I really like this filly and I think she beat a pretty good one on the weekend which is a real credit to her,” noted Rogerson.

“She wasn’t quite right at Avondale so we put her aside and let her mature a little more and she has come back bigger and stronger.

“She will have a run in the Listed two-year-old race at Te Rapa in May and then we will decide what to do with her next but as she doesn’t mind some cut in the track there could be another run for her before she goes away for a spell.”

Rogerson watched the race on television from the Awapuni track where Reminisce represented the stable with distinction as she finished a hard charging third in the Gr. 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.

“She went a beauty and with some more rain on the day she may have even got a better result,” he said.

“She just got run off her feet in the early stages but really stormed home to make it interesting at the finish.

“I’ve always said she will be a better three-year-old so at this stage she looks like being a real contender for some of those good races in the spring.”

Rogerson was also quick to point out the stable had plenty of firepower in the wings as several unraced juveniles get ready for their debut runs.

“We’ve got a number of very promising horses yet to be seen on raceday including a Redoute’s Choice colt along with an I Am Invincible colt who won’t be maidens for too long,” he said.
