3 minute read

Favourite California Chrome has drawn wide in gate 11, one from the outside, for his second attempt to win the $10 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan on Saturday night.

The 2014 US Horse of the Year finished second last year from gate nine.

His veteran trainer Art Sherman has accepted the gate as he regards the preparation he has given California Chrome to be better than last year.

“The outside draw is good if you’ve got the horse and I hope we have,” he said. “He’s got tactical speed so I’m not going to worry about it.”

"I've got the preparation I wanted this year with a start here first. Believe me Chrome is a five lengths better horse than he was last year."

Sherman changed tactics this year with California Chrome, opting to prepare the 5YO in Dubai with a prep race rather than arrive late like he did last year.

California Chrome responded with an easy two lengths win over the World Cup distance on February 25.

Last year’s Travers Stakes winner Keen Ice has drawn the rails gate, the Todd Pletcher-trained Mshawish has gate two and second favourite Frosted goes from gate nine.

Frosted’s trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said: “We are hoping to be outside of the speed. There’s a long run into the first turn which should help us secure a position.”

Hong Kong representative Gun Pit made a favourable impression when finishing second in Round 3 of the Maktoum Challenge on his local debut and his connections were the first to draw their gate, taking three.

“He drew the inside when he ran second on Super Saturday and we’re delighted to put him in barrier three,”said trainer Caspar Fownes.

“He will be handy. I can think he can run a very respectable race from three.

“He is looking really well, he’s in a good place and very comfortable.

“Of course, I respect the fact there are so many good horses in the race but I feel he is a live chance to finish in the first four or five.

“On dirt he is pretty special - he is unbeaten seven from seven on the surface at Sha Tin - and at some point down the road we might take him to America.”
