Japan's Chrysolite Wins Inaugural Korea Cup

3 minute read

Chrysolite, a multiple stakes winner in Japan, was a clear six lengths winner of the inaugural Keeneland Korea Cup held as part of an international day of racing at Seoul racecourse in South Korea on Sunday.

The Keeneland Korea Cup offered a purse of 1 Billion Korean Won (approximately $US911,498) and was contested at 1800 meters over sand.

Also featured on the same race card was the inaugural Keeneland Korea Sprint, worth 700 Million Korean Won ($US637,704) and was won by Super Jockey. The Keeneland Korea Sprint was held at 1200 meters, also over sand.

Both stakes drew full fields of 16 with horses from throughout Asia and as far away as Ireland.

Bred by Northern Farm, Chrysolite is a 6YO by Gold Allure out of Chrysoprase, by El Condor Pasa.

He won the 2013 Japan Dirt Derby and 2015-2016 runnings of the Diolite Kinen.

Chrysolite is trained by Hidetaka Otonashi and was ridden by Joe Fujii.

It was a 1-2 finish in the Keeneland Korea Cup for Japan, with Kurino Star O finishing second. Korea’s Triple Nine was third.

Hong Kong-based Super Jockey, winner of the Keeneland Korea Sprint, is trained by Tony Millard.

The NZ-bred 8YO Super Jockey was second in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in 2015.

Only 12th in the G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize at Sha Tin at his previous start, Super Jockey beat Macheon Bolt by four lengths with Grape Brandy third.

Tony Millard said he was not expecting his horse to win as well as he did.

“The race panned out exactly the way we planned, which doesn’t often happen,” he said.

“He runs very well fresh, we know that and I was very happy with his preparation coming into this.

Millard “said he would get the gelding back to Hong Kong before his next start is decided.
