Mister Kaoru Earns A Trophy Start At Sha Tin

3 minute read

A brilliant win by Mister Kaopu in the Macau Golden Group Fat Choy Cup has earned the gelding a place in the Hong Kong–Macau Trophy to be run at Sha Tin on March 5.

The son of Redoute’s Choice needed a victory in Sunday’s race to lift his rating over the 90 mark to make the entries, and he did it in dazzling style under jockey Ryan Curatolo as he left his rivals standing from the two hundred mark.

In a race with plenty of speedsters, Curatolo fired Mister Kaopu out of the gates and easily crossed the field to sit outside the leader Yanson. The gelding switched off in the run and then once in the straight when Curatolo asked for more, he showed a brilliant turn of foot to dash away.

Felizmaster (Charlie Chan) ran on well for second with Huka Eagle (Charles Perkins) holding on for third. Wudang Mountain a former Chris Waller galloper ran a nice race in fourth for his Macau debut and will be much improved by the run.

Ryan Curatolo has a wonderful record on Mister Kaopu having ridden him five times for three wins and two second placed efforts.

“Man that was awesome. He was like a machine today he exploded out of the gates and then crossed so easy.”

“In the straight when he changed lead he was amazing the way he raced away.”

Mister Kaopu equaled his personal best time of 1.08.7 for the 1200 metres.

The four year old has now won three races and placed three times from his seven starts in Macau and after Sundays race takes his earnings to over $750,000 HKD for his connections.

Trainer Stanley Chin has a nice horse on his hands in Happy Roaring who raced away with the Macau Golden Group Fat Choy Bowl over 1200 metres on Sunday.

Ridden by Akash Aucharuz, Happy Roaring took charge of the race out of the gates and traveled well in the run. Given full rein by Aucahruz at the two hundred the son of Denman (Aus) bounded away from his chasers and had almost two lengths to spare at the line over Mission Gdragon (Ryan Curatolo) , with Master Of Cheers (Charles Perkins) turning in a great run from his wide gate for third.

Happy Roaring had put the writing on the wall with an unlucky second on debut behind Chok King on international day and had come on plenty since that run.

Prior to being imported to Macau, Happy Roaring had bolted away with a maiden race at Taupo when racing as Pentagon Achiever prepared by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.

Happy Roaring’s time of 1.09 for the 1200 metres was just .03 slower then Mister Kaopu suggesting he will be capable of winning in Class 2 company.

Peter Ho took riding honors over the weekend kicking home a winning treble with two wins on Sunday and another on Friday night.

Ho was successful early in the day on Sunday with the K H Leong prepared Californiatreasure racing away with the Happiness Handicap over 1200 metres, than produced a gem of a ride to win the last the Macau Golden Group Fat Choy Plate on Northern Lightning for trainer Joe Lau.

Northern Lightning began awkwardly and was a little further back in the run than expected, but Ho remained unruffled and patiently bided his time hugging the rail. The runs gradually came his way and the gelding had improved nicely to be within striking distance on the corner. Once in the straight they opened up for him and the son of Azamour (IRE) powered down the middle of the track for a good win.

On Friday night Peter Ho scored on the Louis Ho trained Invincible in the Class 1 & 2 Handicap over 1050 metres.

Invincible is a serious racehorse that has now won five of his six starts in Macau. His only defeat was at his previous run when he was beaten a neck by Evergreen Star. Friday’s race saw a rematch of the pair with Invincible prevailing by a head, in what ended up just a two horse race with the two gallopers singling out from the six hundred metre point.

Invincible has dazzling speed for a horse bred to run a lot further. He is by a Breeder’s Cup (turf) winner in War Chant, from a Grand Lodge mare in Miss Belair who was a 2000 metre winner at Flemington in Australia.

Trainer Louis Ho will step the gelding out on the turf for the first time Lisboa Prelude on April 16.
