Ruan Maia Stretches Lead In Macau

Ruan Maia’s dominance of the Macau jockeys’ premiership continues with the Brazilian jockey surging further ahead with a winning treble at the November 17 meeting on the all-weather track at Taipa.

With just 58 races run for the new season, Maia has won 17 and placed in a further 16 giving him a win rate of 31% and a place strike of 60%.

Maia has set up an eight win lead over last season’s champion rider Peter Ho on nine wins, with Irishman Wayne Smith third on six wins.

Maia opened his night on the Stanley Chin prepared Striking Achiever in the 2nd Division of the Class 2 & 3 over 1050 metres.

Striking Achiever hit the line strongly late to finish right over the top of the tear away leader Emperor King (Horace Lam) who went hard in front, with River Treasure (Frankie Choi) turning in an eye catching run from the tail of the field for third.

The son of Lonhro began his racing career in New Zealand under Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young and was an impressive maiden winner at Whangarei at his only start before being exported to Macau.

China Paradise from the Tony Fung yard provided Maia with his second win of the night when he scorched over the sand surface in a brilliant 1.01.4 setting a new class record in the other division of the Class 2 & 3 over 1050 metres.

It was win number three at the distance on the all-weather for the four year old son of Red Arrow, who has really strengthened up in recent months after being somewhat of a speedy squib when he first arrived in Macau.

The KC Chong prepared Eagle Commander rounded out Maia’s night with an all the way victory in the Class 4 over 1350 metres. Eagle Commander had no trouble accounting for Beautiful Spring (Cliffy Lai), with Stadium (Andrew Calder) back in third.

Four times champion Macau jockey Luis Corrales was back in the winners list with a nice win on the Tommy Tse trained Chairman’s Vote in the 30 to 55 rated event over 1050 metres.

Corrales bought the Australian bred seven year old down the outside with a late run to grab the speedy Gracywife (Cliffy Lai) in the shadows of the post, with River Double (Frankie Choi) jumping out of the ground late for third.

The win by Chairman’s Vote gave Tommy Tse a double for the night after Gold On and Cliffy Lai took out the first of the night the Class 6 over 1510 metres.

Gold On a son of the Irish stallion Bushranger ran out an effortless winner after being posted deep the entire run, and looks to have a future in the lower grade on the all weather.

South African rider Martin Wepner picked up his second win for the new season with River God Choi for former champion trainer Sio Cheong in the 25 to 45 rated contest over 1350 metres.
