Sweden’s Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship, inaugurated at Bro Park last year, is set to return to the Stockholm venue on Sunday, 5 August.
French ace Maryline Eon who was crowned champion in 2017 when the event was staged shortly after her Group 1 debut in the Prix de Diane in June, receives an automatic invitation to defend her title as does Megan Nicholls, winner of Arena Racing Company’s innovative Silk Series, also staged for the first time last year across nine tracks in the UK.
Invitations will be issued to a further eight female jockeys, each hand-picked for their international profile and achievements in the saddle, to take part in the points-based competition run over five races on the Sunday afternoon card.
Dennis Madsen Director of Racing at the Swedish racing authority, Svensk Galopp, said, “We are delighted to be returning with the Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship and very pleased to be able to announce our 2018 date on International Women’s Day.
“The Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship highlights the achievements of women on the international sporting stage and shares many of the aims and aspirations of the #PressforProgress campaign. We look forward to announcing the rest of our line-up in the coming months and putting women’s sport firmly in the spotlight on Sunday, 5 August.”
