White Peach  started favourite in the set-weight event after a deadheat win with Black Quail  in a Class 4 – 1250m sprint here three weeks ago when ridden by apprentice Clyde Leck.

Clyde also rode Chonky Potato  to victory in his last outing on New Year's day. He elected to take the ride on White Peach.

The ride on Chonky Potato went to fellow stable apprentice Pavinthran Kumar instead.

Drawn widest in the field of 10, Chonky Potato surged to the front on settling down and quickly made a breakaway. The son of Dalghar maintained a bright gallop for the rest of the journey to win as he liked by three and a half lengths.

White Peach, who settled in midfield, finished the best of the rest to take second placing.

"Gutsy win for Chonky Potato in his first start after a six-month break," said trainer Charles Leck.

"I could not separate the two runners and they finished one and two. Clyde felt Chonky Potato may need a run before he hit his best form, after being away from racing for a while. He picked White Peach instead. That's racing."

Chonky Potato raced for two seasons in New Zealand for a win and two placings and has now won three times in 11 starts in Malaysia.
