Chinese Tea brews well in comeback win

3 minute read

Chinese Tea bounced back to form to capture the Supreme Toto 6/58 Stakes over 1100m at Sungei Besi here today to snap the winning run of GAMESTONKS who was looking for his fourth consecutive win.

Early in the year, Chinese Tea  won a similar Metro A event over the same distance before running a smack-up sixth to SAN ANDREAS in the Tunku Gold Cup last May.

Unplaced in two outings behind his half-brother AWESOME STORM since, CHINESE TEA sprang a big surprise when he outsprinted GAMESTONKS today.

GINGERELLA set the pace with HEARTENING FLYER in pursuit. CHINESE TEA settled a handy third while the odds-on favourite GAMESTONKS followed in fifth place whereas he led all the way in his last three wins.

GINGERELLA was holding on to his lead comfortably until the final 100m when CHINESE TEA and then GAMESTONKS came charging home.

CHINESE TEA, ridden by Hafis Saari, hit the front close to home and won by three quarters of a length from GAMESTONKS. He paid RM64 for a win.

CHINESE TEA scored a hattrick for Charles Leck in 2020 and 2021 before his transfer to Teh Ming Wan who started him four times for a win last year.

CHINESE TEA moved again to Frank Maynard late last year and at eight years, he is racing in his best ever form.

"He had a few issues back in the stables," said Maynard.

"He had a trail last week and I kept him away from the track for a week to keep him fresh. He has always been a good horse and he is back to form."
