Back-in-form Awesome Storm just too strong

3 minute read

With the Tunku Gold Cup just two weeks away, champion sprinter AWESOME STORM has regained his best form just in time to have another success in the 1200m sprint.

The son of Phenomenons scored a runaway in the Cup in 2022 and just failed to complete a double when he beat all but SAN ANDREAS in the same race last year.

Although AWESOME STORM managed two subsequent wins after last year's Cup, the Australian gelding wasn't able to reproduce his best in three runs at the tailend of the year.

Awesome Storm  returned to racing after a 2 1/2-month break a fortnight ago and was clearly in need of a run when he led into the straight but faded to finish fifth to CHINESE TEA over 1200m.

With the run under his belt, a much fitter AWESOME STORM proved too strong for his rivals in the Metro A set-weight event over 1400m at Sungai Besi here today.

Singapore apprentice Jerlyn Seow, riding AWESOME STORM for the first time, took the gelding right to the front on settling down and led his rivals on a merry chase.

The favourite GAMESTONKS tried to run him down from the 400m but to no avail. AWESOME STORM was able to keep up a relentless gallop in the straight to win by 3 1/2 lengths.

SKYDANCE ECLIPSE and SAN ADNREAS were doing good work late in the race to take the minor placings.

"He (AWESOME STORM) was just too good for the field," said Seow. "I just had to jump him well and he had the speed to lead the race. It was a nice and easy ride."

AWESOME STORM has won 11 times in 23 starts since coming over from Australia where he had a win in five starts.

AWESOME STORM was the second leg of a double for Seow who kicked off the afternoon winning on 11-year-old AUSSIE EAGLE who notched his 11th win in 104 runs.
