SOUTH AFRICA: Eton Square Sold To Hong Kong

3 minute read

Dual South African winner Eton Square is going to Hong Kong after a private deal was brokered between his South African owners and Hong Kong interests.

Eton Square was supplemented into the Durban July for only his fifth career start after rallying to win the Jubilee Handicap.

His close fourth behind Pomodoro in the July captured the attention of agents acting for Danny Lam, chairman of a public listed company in Hong Kong.

He has left Gavin van Zyl's stables to go into quarantine in Cape Town and will be travelling to Hong Kong via Mauritius and England.

Van Zyl said: “We wish Mr Lam all the best with his purchase and hope that Eton Square does well on the international circuit.

"We're hoping he'll get to Hong Kong in time to compete in the Hong Kong Derby, which is for four-year-olds.”

Eton Square, by Miesque's Approval, was trained by Van Zyl's son Chesney for much of his career in South Africa.

“It's nice to see them go and compete overseas – if they're good enough, they must go,” Chensey Van Zyl said.

“Eton Square was one of our hopes for next season and it's hard to find horses like him."

Chesney Van Zyl was also responsible for the stable's other star Slumdogmillionaire when he won the SA Classic last season before he chipped a fetlock. He is now back in work.

“His rehabilitation has gone very well,” said Van Zyl.

“He's in Durban at the moment and will probably go to Cape Town with our string for the summer season.

"If everything goes according to plan he'll either come back to me in Johannesburg for the President's Champions Challenge or go straight to Durban for the Durban July.”
