SOUTH AFRICA: Summer Goals For Tevez

3 minute read

Mike Bass landed the Listed Sophomore Sprint at Kenilworth on Saturdaywith the three-year-old colt Tevez to add to his contenders for some big summer targets.

This was a competitive field and Tevez looks to have a chance of following in the footsteps of his famous half-sister Val De Ra, a former Equus Champion Sprinter.

Bass could have a strong hand in next January’s G1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m with Tevez stamping his credentials here and joining his stablemate, the reigning Equus Champion Sprinter What A Winter, as a likely candidate.

What A Winter made his seasonal reappearance on the weekend and ran way below par, only managing fourth in a Pinnacle Stakes event over 1000m where he started at odds of 1-6.

Anton Marcus only had one ride on the card and brought Tevez from off the pace to win by 1,25 lengths as the even mnoney favourite for owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste, Marsh Shirtliff and Bryn Ressel.

At Turffontein, Astro News, the four-year-old Fred Crabbia-owned Silvano gelding currently being trained by Brian Wiid, put up a fine prep run before next Saturday’s Emerald Cup over 1400m at the Vaal.

Astro News ran in a strong Pinnacle Stakes event over 1450m and from a wide draw ran on strongly from the back under Robbie Fradd to finish second to the Ormond Ferraris-trained Tender Twilight.

Astro News has never finished out of the first three on the Highveld in seven starts and his two wins there included the G3 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m last November.

However, he is yet to race on the sand.

Astro News is drawn 11 in the Emerald Cup and will be ridden by Deon Sampson.
