SOUTH AFRICA: Tarry Undecided About Champions Challenge

3 minute read

The Sean Tarry-trained four-year-old E-Jet fought off Glorious Jet to win the G2 Colorado King Stakes at Turffontein but is not certain to go on to the R2 million President’s Champions Challenge at the same course and distance on April 27.

Ridden by Anton Marcus, the son of Jet Master hit the front 300m from home and in a slow run race kept on gamely to hold off Glorious Jet by 1.25 lengths.

E-Jet has been nominated for the Champions Challenge but Tarry said he would have to decide whether to go for that race or concentrate on the Vodacom Durban July – or both.

“He’s in form right now and it’s hard to sidestep a R2 million race, but you have to decide what you want to do," Tarry said.

“I think we want to go on to something bigger than this. If you can’t quicken up in a slow-run race than you will battle against stronger company.

"I said we would take our chances, even if they walk, and he must quicken up. He’s done that well.’’

Marcus had E-Jet placed close to the pace and In the straight there was a brief moment when it appeared he would not get a clear run before he squeezed past the leaders.

“The slow pace was a bit of a double-edged sword,’’ said Marcus.

“I was almost given strict instructions not to lead and I wanted to lead. But I thought I better listen because I didn’t want to be benched with the season coming up.

“It worked out nicely. I think he is a horse with a lot of scope."
